Tennessee Tech University has successfully completed its decennial reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), earning the distinction of its second consecutive reaccreditation with full compliance and zero recommendations.
The outcome represents the highest level of approval possible from the university’s institutional accreditor and confirms Tech’s compliance with rigorous standards related to academics, governance, finances, student support, institutional effectiveness and overall integrity.
Accreditation plays a critical role in higher education, affecting everything from students’ eligibility for federal financial aid to the transferability of academic credits, the recognition of university degrees and institutions’ access to grants and research funding.
“This process is always a major undertaking for universities every 10 years. While there was little doubt that Tennessee Tech would do very well, it remains a tremendous point of pride that we earned our second consecutive reaffirmation of accreditation without a single recommended change,” said Tech President Phil Oldham. “The SACSCOC review process examines virtually every aspect of an institution, and receiving reaffirmation with no recommendations demonstrates that our faculty and staff consistently operate at the highest level.”
Oldham also praised Associate Provost Sharon Huo, who serves as the university’s SACSCOC liaison and oversees Tech’s accreditation and assessment activities.
“Dr. Huo has devoted years to ensuring Tennessee Tech remains fully aligned with accreditation standards, and this achievement reflects her outstanding work alongside the contributions of colleagues across campus,” Oldham added.
Huo, who joined Tech’s faculty in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering in 1998 and was elevated to the role of associate provost and SACSCOC liaison in 2012, said the outcome reflects a shared commitment to excellence across campus.
“This was truly a team effort,” said Huo. “Faculty, staff, students, trustees and university leadership all played important roles in demonstrating who we are as an institution and how committed we are to fulfilling our mission. The support and engagement throughout this process were extraordinary.”
Huo continued, “To have two consecutive reaffirmations of accreditation with no recommendations or findings is a rare accomplishment in higher education and speaks to the culture of excellence that exists across Tennessee Tech.”
The reaffirmation process spanned approximately two-and-a-half years and involved extensive preparation, documentation and review. More than 150 members of the Tech community contributed to the effort, with input and participation from faculty, students, trustees and university leadership.
As part of the review, SACSCOC evaluators examined a comprehensive institutional report and conducted an on-site visit that included meetings with university leaders, faculty, students and trustees, as well as reviews of academic programs, student services, financial and physical resources, and compliance with accreditation standards.
The accreditation milestone marks the latest in a series of recent achievements for Tech. During the 2025-2026 academic year, Tech celebrated its largest spring commencement and highest freshman retention rate in university history. Earlier this year, the university also received its fifth consecutive clean audit with an unmodified opinion from the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury.
Tennessee Tech is ranked as the No. 1 public university in Tennessee by Money.com and is recognized among the nation’s Best National Universities by U.S. News & World Report.
