The Cannon County Rescue Squad's first annual Safety Day proved to be a hit Saturday, April 22 drawing a big crowd to the county fairgrounds.

Firefighters, police officers, Vanderbilt's LifeFlight helicopter provided static displays as well as demonstrations to interested spectators.

A Safety Day centerpiece was the Rescue Squad's new, fully-equipped rescue truck that includes state-of-the-art equipment like the Jaws of Life designed to cut through boron steel used in today's automobiles.

"We first started with a little pickup truck and thanks to the support of every one in Cannon County we have managed to upgrade," said First Lt. Adam Hayes.

The new rescue truck pulls a search and rescue trailer that carries four-wheelers and other equipment including a mobile version of the county's 911 system.

"This is a side of 911 you never see," said 911 director Roy Sullivan, explaining the mobile system is a redundant back-up.
