Billy Joe Mathis, age 63, passed away January 22, 2012, at this home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a life-long resident of Woodbury and a native of Coffee Co.
He is preceded in death by his father, William Mathis; mother, Elizabeth Stanley Mathis Merritt; Brother, Jerry Mathis; Sister, Betty Markum and Step-Sister, Joan Todd.
Survivors include his companion of 26 years, Kay Mathis of Woodbury; Daughters, Mandy Joe Mathis (Blake Edwards) & Betty Lou (Mitchell) Sanders of Woodbury; 2 beloved grandsons, William Braxton Edwards and Ryan Mitchell Sanders of Woodbury; Sisters, Joyce (Jim) Weiss, Jean (Troy) Murphy, Alice Davis, Ruth (Ricky) Murphy all of Woodbury; Mary Ellen Carmack of McMinnville; his brother, George David â€œPeanutâ€ Mathis of Woodbury, Step-Sister, Dale Gregory of KY; Step-brother, Wade Merritt of Woodbury; Sister-in-law, Ruby Mathis of Woodbury; and beloved brother & sister-in-law, Ray & Kathy Murphy of Smithville.
A member of the Church of Christ, he spent his years farming, working construction and several years of tree service. Many beautiful farms of Cannon County show his passion for perfection with his well-made, well known fences.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2012 with Bro. Al Bugg officiating. Interment will follow in the Centerhill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 11 am until 9 pm Tuesday, January 24, 2012.
Pallbearers include Mike Wilson, Ronnie & Jeff Hall, Russell Davenport, Dale Cruel, Jimmy & Glen Higgins, David Thomas, Jeff & Michael Estes & Michael Freeze.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Woodbury Funeral Home for final expenses.
