"Upon arrival I found a blue Toyota Tacoma upside down in the creek in the 200 block of Toy Denny Road. I saw a subject out with the vehicle who stated the driver was his son and that he was at home," reported Deputy Randy Wildes.
Deputy Doc Smith retrieved the driver, William James Alexander, and brought him back to the scene of the crash. An ambulance was dispatched to check out Alexander's injuries. Deputy Mike Hainey was dispatched to the intersection of Jim Cummings and Geedsville Road to investigate a crash that had knocked a 20-foot gap in a fence owned by Raymond Pedigo. When Hainey arrived an unnamed bypasser had already guided several cattle out of the roadway and back behind the fence.
"I herded several cattle away from the gap in the fence line, then observed several pieces of plastic from the undercarriage and an exterior rear view mirror lying on the ground," Hainey reported.
The deputy then asked the Cannon County 911 Center to notify Coffee County about the crash and included a description of the damaged vehicle.
Deputy Bryson soon arrived on the scene and continued the search for the missing vehicle, while Hainey kept the cattle from wandering back on the roadway.
Bryson soon discovered the vehicle, and its driver, in the area of Williams Road where it was off the road and stuck in the mud. A Coffee County deputy arrived on the scene and and kept Ruiz in custody until Hainey arrived at the scene with the broken mirror which matched the Dodge Durango that was driven by Ruiz.
"I asked Mr. Ruiz if he had been involved in a traffic accident in Cannon County at the intersection of Jim Cummings and Geedsville. Mr. Ruiz stated that he had been in Cannon County earlier, but had not wrecked there. I asked Mr. Ruiz the same question a second time and he persisted in his initial response," Hainey said.
Hainey asked Ruiz the same question a third time and he continued to deny his involvement. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Cannon County Jail.
