WOODBURY - The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development announced Woodbury is among the 12 Tennessee communities selected to participate in the fifth round of the Tennessee Downtowns program. Other communities selected include Ashland City, Crossville, Dickson, Gainesboro, Hohenwald, Humboldt, Lenoir City, Livingston, Lynchburg, Manchester and Wartburg.

The Tennessee Downtowns program, an affiliated program of Tennessee Main Street, is a highly competitive program designed to assist communities in launching comprehensive revitalization efforts. Communities selected to participate in the program have downtown commercial districts established at least 50 years ago and have demonstrated their readiness to organize efforts for downtown revitalization. Selections were based on historic commercial resources, economic and physical need, demonstrated local effort, overall presentation and probability of success.

As a Tennessee Downtowns program participant, the town of Woodbury will undergo training based on the Main Street Four-Point Approach to downtown revitalization which will guide the community and steering committee in effective long term planning for the downtown area including a plan of action for grant funds that will be awarded next July.

A local steering committee for the program has already been established. Individuals interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact Upper Cumberland Development District's Community Development Planner, Virginia Solimine at (931) 432-4111.

The town of Woodbury worked with the Upper Cumberland Development District in the application process and will continue to receive support from UCDD throughout the program.

The Upper Cumberland Development District provides regional planning and assistance to the 14-county Upper Cumberland region to promote economic growth and community enhancement. For more information about services offered through the UCDD, contact (931) 432-4111.
