The Arts Center of Cannon County is pleased to announce their 3rd Annual White Oak Basketry Rib Basket Workshop to be held at the Arts Center November 8-10, 2013.  

This workshop will be taught by Master basket maker, Sue Williams. The price for the 3 day workshop is $150 and includes all materials needed for each participant to make their own White Oak Basket. There is limited space available so make your reservations as soon as possible. 

Sue Williams, master basket maker, has been making white oak baskets for over twenty five years.  She has studied and apprenticed under Estel Youngblood, Gertie Youngblood, and Mary Jane Prater.  Sue has taken classes under Betty Curry, Billy Owens, Martha Weatherbee, and Nathan Taylor. She has won best of show in local, district and state competitions. 

Sue has taught the Heritage Skills White Oak Basket Seminar at the Clyde York Training Center near Crossville, Tennessee for 16 years. The focus of the seminar has been the ribbed white oak egg basket involving the Cannon County bow tie technique.  Sue is a founding member of the Tennessee Basketry Association and remains an advocate of the various seminars and conventions associated with the organization.  

Sue will lead you through the construction of a ribbed egg basket using white oak as well as a PowerPoint discussion illustrating the harvesting of the tree and splitting and working the wood.

The Arts Center is located on 1424 John Bragg Highway, just west of the town of Woodbury, approximately 20 minutes from Murfreesboro, Manchester, and McMinnville and one hour southeast of Nashville.
