Former sheriff Kenny Wetzel is making another bid for the top law enforcement position in Cannon County.

Wetzel, who served for about 10 months on an interim basis after Junior Brandon was removed from office in 2001 due to a criminal conviction, and then was elected to a four-year term in 2002, picked up qualifying petition papers from the Cannon County Election Office.

That makes at least five possible candidates for the job. Incumbent Billy Nichols, Howard Mike Grosch, Jack Miller and Darrell Young have also obtained petition papers to qualify. The deadline is April 1 at noon.

In other recent activity at the Election Office, Jimmy Mingle is trying to qualify to run for Second District Commission, and Robert Eisenmann is interested in running for the Road Commissioner Zone 3 seat.

Also, Administrator of Elections Stan Dobson reports he is recovering well from injuries sustained in an automotive accident last week on Auburntown Road.

The General Election is scheduled for this year on August 5.

The Election Commission will convene for its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 1.
