The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency’s Nutrition Program for Older Adults & Adults with Disabilities will join communities across the nation in the annual commemoration of Older Americans Month — a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to celebrat-ing the contributions and achievements of older Americans.

Since 1963, The theme for Older Americans Month 2012 — Never Too Old to Play! — puts a spotlight on the important role older adults play in sharing their experience, wisdom, and understanding, and passing on that knowl-edge to other generations in a variety of significant ways. This year’s celebrations will recog-nize the value that older adults continue to bring to our communities through spirited participa-tion in social and faith groups, service organizations, and other activities.

As large numbers of baby-boomers reach retirement age, many communities have increased their efforts to provide meaningful opportunities for older adults — many of whom remain physically and socially active through their 80s and beyond. Current trends show that people over age 60 account for an ever-growing percentage of participants in community service positions, faith-based organizations, online social networking as well as arts and recreational groups.

While the Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency’s Nutrition Program for Older Adults & Adults w/Disabilities provides services, support, and resources to older Americans year-round, Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to show special appreciation for some of our most beloved citizens. We have many reasons to celebrate them!

Please join UCHRA in an appreciation luncheon in celebrating Older American Month on May 22, 2012. Special activities have been planned as well as award presentations to all the volunteers in appreciation for their contribution to the meals program.

The luncheon will be held at UCHRA’s Nutrition sites located in the Senior Centers. Luncheon tickets for guest under 60 years of age are $5.00. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance. Join your neighbors not only to recognize what older citizens bring to our communities, but also to help them con-tinue playing a vital role in weaving a unique and lasting community fabric. We invite you to join in the fun!
