The purpose of a parsonage on West Adams Street near Woodbury Grammar School, operated by Captured By Grace Ministries, became clearer Tuesday night during the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Woodbury Planning Commission meeting.
Wes Frazier, President of the Captured By Grace Ministries, attended the meeting and approached the Commission to make it clear that the residence was not being utilized as a safe house for victims of domestic violence.
During January's meeting the Commission mentioned several complaints from people that the house was being utilized as a domestic shelter.
After asking Frazier what the definition of a church parsonage was, he responded by saying that they live there and bring women and children into the home and help them get on their feet.
The women and children are mainly homeless and they have helped eight people gain employment. The people usually stay a week or two or up to a month. Most of the people referred to the parsonage are from other churches in and around Cannon County.
Frazier said he realizes the danger of putting a safehouse near a school.
"If somebody put a safehouse in front of my child's school or my grandson's school I'd have a fit about it."
Since it is a parsonage, the church itself is located on the Old Woodbury Highway in the old Valley Deli building.
• In the only action during the Woodbury Board Of Zoning Appeals, the Board approved the special exception request for apartments in the C-3 Commerical Zoning District at 213 West High Street.
Tentatively named Applebaum Apartments, the complex will be a two-story complex consisting of 6 unit apartments. Four one-bedroom and two two-bedroom apartments, with three apartments on each story. There will be 11 parking spaces available for the apartments.
The board agreed for the rear yard setback variance request of 15 feet for the proposed apartments as well.
