According to the Accuweather Global Weather Center Sunny skies to through most of the weekend has given creeks and rivers across the South a chance to recede, but the reprieve will be short-lived.

As the storm treks eastward out of the Plains and into the Ohio Valley early week, rainfall will spread across the flood-weary South.

"The good news is this system will move through rather quickly, especially in areas hit hard by recent flooding. Places like Jackson, Mississippi, which has received nearly 10 inches of rain this month, should have on the order of 0.50 to 1 inch," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Samuhel said.

Any additional rainfall across the Southern states early this week will only add insult to injury as flooding relief efforts continue.

While many of the smaller creeks and streams will likely be below flood stage by this time, some of the main waterways - including the Mississippi River - will continue to be out of their banks.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the river was rose into major flood stage Saturday night, and with the predicted rain early week, the river will likely be in major flood stage until early March.

Wet weather will likely stick around into Tuesday, especially across the Southeast
