A Cannon County man died early Monday morning from injuries sustained in a one vehicle crash.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Michael Clay Johnson, 36, of Joe Blanton Road, was traveling east on Highway 281 in the Center Hill community when his vehicle left the highway and traveled through a wooden fence and then hit several trees.

Johnson was airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital following the accident. He died there from the injuries received in the accident.

According to the investigating officer, Trooper Bruce Pryor, Johnson was not wearing a seat belt. A preliminary investigation led Pryor to believe Johnson fell asleep at the wheel.

In addition to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Cannon County Sheriff’s Department, Cannon County Emergency Medical Services, Rescue Squad and other first responders assisted at the scene. First responders were dispatched around 3:00 a.m. Monday.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Woodbury Funeral Home.
