On Thursday, April 26th, 2012 class representatives from Mr. William F. Curtis’s US Government classes visited and observed State Government in action at the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville, Tennessee.  Several very good things occurred on this excellent field trip.

• The class was recognized on the House and Senate floors.

• Rep. Mark Pody took Mr. Curtis onto the House floor during this “live” House session to meet with Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver and Rep. Kevin Brooks (a personal friend of Mr. Curtis from Lee University in Cleveland, TN).

Rep. Pody stated to the entire House in introducing Mr. Curtis, “I would like to welcome the US Government Class of Cannon County High School and their teacher Mr. Wiliam Freddy Curtis. Three of us are arguing about who he is to sit by. He is a constituent of Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver, teaches at Cannon County High School in my district, and went to Lee University with Rep. Kevin Brooks. Please make him and his class welcome! ”

Curtis said, “I got to sit next to Rep. Pody and participate in discussions with various representatives on the floor, while my class looked on from the gallery. This was a very special time for me.”

• The class had lunch in the Legislative Plaza Café where Rep. Mark Pody, Rep. David Alexander and Senator Mae Beavers interacted with the class. Each student received a Tennessee Blue Book, Official Map of Tennessee, 2012 Official Vacation Guide of Tennessee, and official Tennessee lapel pin.

• The class had a special meeting in a committee room with Rep. Mark Pody’s Administrative Assistant Debbie Stephens. Students asked questions and became aware of the committee processes.

The U.S. Government Class of Cannon County High School would like to thank Representative Mark Pody and his assistant Mrs. Debbie Stephens for helping make this trip possible and with great success. Also accompanying the group was Mrs. Lisa Murphy. Mr. Matt Rigsby, Mrs. Annie Reed – CCHS Teachers and Mr. Adam Ward – MTSU Student Teacher. These students will remember and hopefully utilize in the future this memorable experience in Tennessee State Government.

Students attending this Observation of State Government in Action were: Elizabeth Rhea, Gabriel Patterson, McKala Rollins, Samantha Phillips, Carla Kurth, Jared Wheeler, Elaine Greer, Victoria Harmon, John House, Cody Hurley, Ryan McLaurine, Ashley Basham, Brittany McNeese, Ethan Bryson, Daniel Hass, Blake Paige, Janae Parker, Amy Philhower, Clarisa Prater, Nick Baker, Roberta Hamm, Kayla Hale, Karly Pelham, Matthew Nipper, Brent Champion, Adam Kyle Cooper, Camille Gilley, Haley Nichols, Sloane Gragg, Austin Gilley-Greer, Mitchell Taylor, Abbey Spry, Caleb Bryan, and Brandon Ferrell.
