Senior forward Gabe Walkup beats the defense for a shot in non-district action at Warren County.
McMINNVILLE - It is the holiday season and Cannon County's boys basketball team is in a giving mood - at least it was at Warren County Monday night.

The Lions (7-2) were overwhelmed after gift-wrapping  a 77-75 win for Warren County after having led by as many as 18 points in the second half. Cannon County scored with relative ease throughout its game against Warren County but offered little resistence defensively and was guilty of numerous unforced turnovers that helped key Warren County's comeback.

Jared Nave led Cannon County with 20 points and Justin Davenport contributed 17. Colin Jones (13) and Cody Ruehlen (11) also reached double figures, while Brian Cripps (8) and resever Justin Tobin (6) came close.
Scoring was not a problem. Landing four players in double figures has meant certain victory for Cannon County so far this season - until Monday's madness in McMinnville. The Lions surrended 29 points in the fourth quarter and were outscored by 13 in the final eight minutes.

Cannon County had two leads of nine and six leads of seven, including a 69-62 advantage on Jones' layup with 3:39 remaining, but Warren County got back-to-back 3-pointers from Daniel Hunter in a 39-second span to tie the game 75-75 with 1:16 remaining.

Tyler Glenn's two free throws with five seconds remaining gave Warren County a 77-75 lead and Davenport's desperation shot at the buzzer was off the mark, leaving the Lions stunned.

Cannon County will look to remain unbeaten in District 8-AA play when it faces Smith County at Carthage Friday.

Check out next week's print edition of The Cannon Courier for a complete report of Cannon County's game at Warren County.

This headline should say "Rigsby Gift-Wrapped Win For Warren County".

He is a nice guy and I like him, but he has a long way to go before he turns into a real coach. Common sense should tell anyone not to pull all your starters and put in three and four Sophmores even with a 15 point lead.

He does it every time they get a big lead and the other teams catches up every time. Someone needs to explain simple substitution tactics to him and explain he has nine Seniors and there is no need for all of them to be on the bench at the same time.

He was outcoached this game!

But, I guess it is always easy for people like me to coach from the bleachers isn't it?
December 07, 2010 at 6:59am
Damn that one hurts. Shouldn't lose to Warren. Cannon is better than that.
December 07, 2010 at 9:10am
Josh- With a 15 point lead and 9 seniors those 9 seniors will not be there next year! The bench need's playing time. Warren County made a run and it payed off for them. Out of a total of 22 turnovers Coach Rigsby's substitutions made 0. I WILL REPEAT 0!! I would hate to know a Basketball team would have a bad nite! By the way I have a Rock in my shoe can you tell me how to get it out?
December 07, 2010 at 9:13am
I agree that this is a game that the BOYS should not have lost. However, it is quite comical to me how two days earlier, this same website posted a story about the team beating Dekalb and how great of a job Rigsby has done. Now that a game was lost, Rigsby is not just the reason they lost, but apparently isn’t a “real” coach at all. Right, Josh? Give me a break! Merriam-Webster defines a coach as “one who instructs players in the fundamentals of a competitive sport and directs team strategy.” The key word is instructs. Rigsby can’t go out on the court and make the EIGHT seniors he has perform a certain way. Josh, there are eight seniors, not nine, which tells me you are the typical fair-weather fan. If you had been at the game, you would also know that two seniors were always on the floor. I wish you would enlighten me on what a “real” coach is and about these “simple substitution tactics” you speak of. Really, I would like to know. However, it is much easier to get on here and blast someone, when I am sure you do absolutely nothing to help build a program. Not to quote Rigsby word for word, but “age is just a number and the best will be on the floor.” Last night, your seniors didn’t get off the bus! At the end of the day, Rigsby has done a great job in the small amount of time he has been there. We could always go back to winning one game a year against a JV team like the boys did in 2006…just 4 years ago!
December 07, 2010 at 10:35am
Josh, you're an idiot. You must have been the coach 4 years ago. Your real name isn't Knox is it? I digress. Rigsby is the best coach they have had here in 9 or 10 years. He is a perfect fit. There are going to be games like this where you did everything but win the game. This will hopefully motivate this team and help in the the upcoming district schedule. Good job Coach Rigsby.

lilly the easiest way to get a rock out of your shoe is to take it off and dump it out. I am not real sure what was so hard about figuring that out.

I never said anything about turnovers either, but if you have a 15 point lead and put Sophmores in the game who aren't as good as your Seniors and wonder why the other team went on a run then you must not really understand basketball at all.

And the time to play Sophmores and Freshmen is during the JV game. Again, not hard to figure out unless you have Juniors and Seniors who are in foul trouble.

And look I really like Matt. I think he has the makings of a good coach. And anyone is better than the idiot Coach Johnson. But, Matt has got a long way to go or he would not have blown a 15 point lead is all I am saying.
December 07, 2010 at 11:21am
So he "blown" the lead? What and why do you feel qualified to make decisions such as who plays when?
And, actually if you would do your homework before you make statements on this public forum, you would also know, we had two core players in foul trouble. What about the Sophomore that steppin and played great last night? Or, Saturday night when another Sophomore came in to knock down 2 huge free throws?
But, by your logic, these two instances should never have happened unless it was in a JV game only!
December 07, 2010 at 12:41pm
So the seniors didn't get off the bus? Who do you think gave them that 15 point lead?
December 07, 2010 at 1:49pm
This sounds like something from "Coach T" !!!!!!!!!!
December 07, 2010 at 3:05pm
Well said chewielouie! As for Josh, you're not real bright. If you're going to offer an opinion, get your facts straight. You must have been one of those JR PRO coaches a few years ago. Every player on that team is coached, not just on the floor but off the floor as well. You are probably the type of person that does whatever it takes to win, but you have NO CHARACTER. If I don't recall these seniors were starting when they were FRESHMAN. You use the word SOPHMORE loosely. I think these SOPHMORES are solid and I think they would probably run through a brick wall for you. There are solid enough to hold an 18 point lead against warren county high school, and if coach Rigsby didn't think they could, he wouldn't put them in. It's nice to know the COACH as confidence in his players unlike you! Could the guys play a little tougher? Of course they could and get that killer mentality to put teams away. If anyone is going to instill that mentality, it's coach Rigsby. I guess a Sophmore coming in a game and knocking down 2 FT's against a rival is not good enough. I believe that's pressure and he handled it extremely well. I'm sure if you was in a coaching situation such as coach Rigsby (but wait you call him Matt like you know him personally- you 2 must play golf together or something) anyway I'm sure you would have all the answers!! Thank you COACH josh!
December 07, 2010 at 5:19pm
It doesn't matter how big of a lead you have or how many points each person (whatever class they are in) scored! At the end of the day, you win as a team and you lose as a team! Yes, they had a 15 point lead, but the sophomores were not the only ones that lost the lead. If memory serves me correctly, several seniors (along with other players) were beat off the dribble, did not rebound, and missed easy shots in the paint.

Josh- Coach Rigsby blew the 15 point lead? Dude, you have got to reread your comments before you post. What coach is in the profession they are in to lose a 15 point lead? NOT ONE!!! I bet Abbey Sissom is glad she doesn't play for you, because she would be riding the pine this year since she is a freshman! Instead, she starts and was the high scorer in the girl's game! I am still waiting for a definition of a "real" coach and "simple substitution tactics." I am also still curious to know what you are doing to make Cannon County basketball better. It is always easy to point the finger when you don't have the knowledge, guts, or leadership skills to apply for the job yourself. Or maybe you did, and didn't get it. I guess we will never know!
December 07, 2010 at 5:48pm
OK what's wrong with you folks...trying to one up the titans????
How quick your memory fades... as quick as two nights ago...the game against Dekalb was one to talk about for years to come. And it was a district game...Warren County really has no meaning, just a game in the whole scheme of things. It has been stated you can learn just as much in a loss as you can a win. Sometimes you just aren't going to win every game, I hope you folks aren't expecting that. Get off Matt Rigsby (and Coach Dodgen if you plan to go there)...
Matt Rigsby has done a great job with the men's basketball program at Cannon County. Instead of looking up the definition of a coach maybe you should look up a "Leader". Matt's vision can be seen by the average fan such as myself. His dedication to every level of player from the kindergardner playing Junior Pro ball, the AAU teams he has implemented and improved over the past two years and of course the basketball team that is off to a great start. I believe he has a strategy for this county and he has enlisted a core group of folks (AAU coaches and Junior Pro volunteers)that will help this county to the next level and substain it....
These coaches are doing a good job!!!!! Do i agree with every thing they do, no I don't, but I know i couldn't do the job they are doing....So get on board and ride with the team(s). Show up and support the men and womens teams and shake you coaches hand and tell him what a good job he is doing... and you better hope he (Matt) doesn't leave like a Bush, Burks, Ensell( i know 2 of the 3 didn't caoch here) and take his talents to other schools outside of CC.
December 08, 2010 at 6:16am
Josh aka ...aka...aka..., non-district games mean nothing in the big picture, only an excellent opportunity to get the bench in the game to help improve that team when district play comes down the pike. Sometimes you do that subbing when your ahead and sometimes even when losing in non-district games--but it is extremely important to get the bench in the flow so you know what to expect when the chips are down.

You had the same "I know it all" as a Jr. Pro coach, your "idiot Coach Johnson" shows that.

December 08, 2010 at 9:22am
all I am saying is if you are up 15 to 18 points and you lose the game by two you are outcoached. If you people can't figure that out then you don't know basketball as good as you think either. And the sophomores ain't to solid or they wouldn't have blown the lead. I was there, I saw it.

And non district games do mean something to because if you have a tie in the district then the seeding is based on overall record for the post-tournament dailyreader aka dodo, so you don't know everything.

And practice, JV games, AAU games in the summer, putting one sophomore in the game at a time is how you get bench time for other players and give the Senior players a rest. Those are basic substitution concepts for you non-basketball retards.
December 08, 2010 at 10:42am
So when the lead was lost, only sophomores were playing? I don't think so! Josh, make sure to tell Abbey Sissom that she shouldn't be playing because she is not a senior, nor Lindsey Reed, Joanna Young, Zach Higgins (who hit the two big free throws versus Dekalb)! So if you lose a game, who are outcoached? Really? Then every coach in the history of basketball is not a "real" coach, because they have all lost a game. Josh, you just wanted to run your mouth with no regard to your lack of knowledge of the game or poor grammar! IF YOU CAN'T TAKE THE HEAT, GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN!!!
December 08, 2010 at 12:22pm
This is really getting amazing, Cannon County basketball is as strong now as it has been in years. We have quality coaches that are not perfect, but I feel are doing a fantastic job. I know alot of programs that wished they were as blessed as Cannon County is now. Why can't everyone appreciate what we have and realize how bad it could be if we didn't have the quality people that we have and why do some people feel obligated to brow beat. Thanks mkjomurf for your well said and educated comments.
December 08, 2010 at 6:52pm
Josh- Give it up dude! You not going to win this one. Why would seniors need to rest in pre-season games with AAA teams from across the state! That is the time to see the mix as to what works for our program seniors on down! If I was you I probably go and stay home game nite and listen on WBRY because you are not a lion supporter nor will you ever be until you and others get the coach yall want and put CC back in the losing column! One problem I DON'T THINK YOU CAN DO THAT TO THIS COACH! He will do what ever is best for Cannon County - Jr pro on up. After Smith County give us a full report I am sure you will have one. Thanks that did get that rock out.
December 08, 2010 at 10:31pm
I think Josh is upset because nobody wants his dad to coach at CCHS!!!!
December 09, 2010 at 8:15am
OK all you basketball guru's, you watch the next time the boys are up 15 points and the Seniors are pulled out and replaced by Sophomores and see how quickly the other team catches up. That is being outcoached. Period. End of argument.

lilly I am not trying to win anything and I am a hell of a Lion supporter by the way. And you can't follow what I said obviously cause I didn't say Seniors needed a rest in AAU games. I said that was the time to get Freshman and Sophomore players playing time.

Matt isn't Tom Izzo or Coach K. He is at best a mediocre coach who might and I say might get the Lions to one round of the playoffs. You guys keep dreaming. With this much Senior talent we should never have lost against Warren County when you are up by 18. That isn't very hard to figure out. Sorry none of you understand that or can accept it.
December 09, 2010 at 8:37am
I'd be willing to bet "Matt", as well as the players would also say they should not have lost an 18 pooint lead.
With your ramblings, you seem to imply that all Seniors should play the entire game. Again, we have 8 Seniors, 1 injured and 1 who has never played. Do the math, that leaves 6. So, 6 kids are to play the entire game, with no other substitutions?

I would also go on to believe he doesn't care about your opinion or anyone else's in terms of how he runs HIS program! It seems apparent that no one else on this forum cares to hear or agree with your opinion also.

December 09, 2010 at 1:00pm
I never implied he should play all Seniors at once, I just simply said he shouldn't pull them all off the floor at the same time.

Do the math yourself *unless Rigsby taught you that too* because if you substitute one in at a time that will give you all the rest you need!

I don't care about your opinion either, so I guess that makes us even. Like I said before, take them all out and put in all the sophomores and watch the other team blow right by you. It will happen every time unless the other team truly sucks!
December 09, 2010 at 2:51pm
Josh, I have been reading all these comments and have decided to make mine. First of all I was not at the game and I am certainly not criticizing the coach. I agree with you that you cannot make mass substitutions with a lead too early in the game. It gives your opponent a chance to catch up and also breaks the momentum of the game for the starters. When you have eight seniors on the team the time should be now not next year. Also, if a person thinks that any game is not part of the big picture then that person doesn't know what the big picture really is. Your original post was constructive criticism and that is always good. After all, it is only an opinion. No real reason for anyone to get bent out of shape about it.
December 10, 2010 at 7:36am
josh, you finally found yourself A fan.
December 10, 2010 at 8:12am
charlie, poor attempt at sarcasm and belittling at best BUT "constructive criticism" ,your joking right? Read it one more time and point out the constructive parts, if you are serious. Let me save you the time, they aren't there.
December 10, 2010 at 10:03am
goober is a fitting name. I bet you were not at the game were you? And it is obvious you know nothing about basketball. and unlike you I don't crave a fan or care if you or anyone else agrees with me. I said all along I like Matt and I do. Sorry u cant understand what constructive means when someone says they like a dude, but taking all the seniors out too early and too often doesn't make good basketball sense.

I will also say once again, if you or anyone else who thinks they know basketball wants to lose then by all means continue to follow the idea of pulling all of the Seniors out and substituting the Sophomores in and watch the lead disappear.
December 10, 2010 at 2:44pm
by:josh, I never said anything about basketball so how anything is obvious is beyond anyone but you. I guess with your all knowing power you can know what i crave (not in your wildest dreams). sorry if i offended the only person who agrees with you out of ALL these opinions. Not very obvious why you feel you must defend charlie, dude. As for matt, I and I bet most of us dont care what you think about him, but it is truly a real shame If this is the way you talk about people you like.

constructive-serving a useful purpose; tending to build up : constructive criticism. because it is "obvious" u cant understand what it means.

then you continue to try to convince us you know what you are talking about.

If you were a smart as you think you are, you would have realized long ago to -give it up!
December 10, 2010 at 3:44pm
If you had a penname other than something that describes a peanut or someone with little or no intelligence you would understand you didn't undertsand what you were talking about either. So keep on trucking there GOOBER.

Try calling Barney or Gomer and see what they think.
December 10, 2010 at 5:05pm
Josh time to go to Bed! GOOD NITE SWEET PRINCE
December 10, 2010 at 5:16pm
bi-josh, great come back! i understand you understand that we understand its understood. How many more years till you will be in high school?

To be an adult , even if just for a moment, what part of your first opinion or for that matter any of your opinions displayed corrective criticism? I dont expect a direct answer because THERE AINT ONE!
December 10, 2010 at 7:01pm
This is why I love woodbury. Passionate about their bball. Oh wait no this town is just full of bs. My bad
December 11, 2010 at 9:24am
goober,if you knew what you thought you knew, if you were as intelligent as your pen name, if you actually had a response that was basketball related, you would know that Matt contacted ME and not YOU. So apprently he does care what I think regardless of what you believe.

You might even know that he and I have been talking about my comments and he and I have come to a mutual agreement about everything I have said above.

But, like usual, you are without knowledge, without wit or wisdom and without sense or direction in your comments. Hence the name GOOBER and not EINSTEIN.

And the whole "i understand you understand that we understand its understood" was brilliant and completely within your intelligence range and sentence structure capabilities.
December 11, 2010 at 9:56am
Goober, The word was constructive not corrective. Try to focus on the discussion.
December 11, 2010 at 3:26pm
Well fellas, if a horse is dead then you should stop kicking it!

December 11, 2010 at 3:39pm
sorry charlie--i stand corrected but your first comment proclaimed josh's first post was offering constructive criticism. I still disagree and state again-- "poor attempt at sarcasm and belittling at best BUT not "constructive criticism"."

bi-josh, What can I say to your incoherent wandering rants? All I have done and will do one more time is state--" To be an adult , even if just for a moment, what part of your first opinion or for that matter ANY of your opinions displayed constructive criticism? I dont expect a direct answer because THERE AINT ONE!"

I do expect another one of your incoherent wandering rants and am sure you cant and wont offer an answer in your barrage because as I have stated many times now, THERE AINT ONE!!!

Maybe belittling others gives you a superior feeling or some psycho satisfaction because it is ALL you do. You can say or think whatever you want of me and I assure you its effects on me is nada dude but hey, if it rocks your world, have at it.
December 11, 2010 at 5:35pm
Amen awc96. Time to move on. Goodbye all.
December 11, 2010 at 9:29pm
I would like everyone to know that COACH RIGSBY has not had a conversation with "Josh." I know for a fact that he would like to, but some people just hide behind screen names and are not man enough to actually contact him. So "Josh" is not only an idiot but also a liar! Good try though!
December 12, 2010 at 7:24am
Glad you think you know chewielouie, but I can quote you what was said if you would like. I can also let you know his cell phone number if you would like that as well since he gave it to me also. Apparently you are not being told everything that you think to be true.

How else would I know his cell phone number unless he actually gave it to me? How else would I be able to actually prove what he said unless what I am saying is true. I can also provide three different email addresses from him if you would like those also. Call me a liar all you want, but I did not contact HIM, HE contacted ME!

I simply told Matt that I thought he outcoached himself during that game. I asked him to respect my right to my opinion and he has replied to me that he does respect that right and that critisim comes with the job he does. I never said we agreed on all of my comments, I said we had come to a mutal agreement about them and I still believe that to be true.

And goober you are a waste of oxygen and you can keep on rambling all you want because nothing you have said at anytime is basketball related or actually made sense in any way. So if it "rocks your world", by all means continue on with your stupidity.
December 12, 2010 at 10:46am
I understand why you didn't answer the only question I HAVE ever brought to this table--because THERE AINT ONE!!!

1) "but I can quote you what was said if you would like."-- sorry but that proves NOTHING. You may believe your word is gospel but looks like MANY of us don't. At the point now, one has straight up called you a liar?

2) "I can also let you know his cell phone number if you would like that as well since he gave it to me also."-- Again proves nothing except you like the word also and have immense desire to convince us you are right. (not happening here)

3) "Apparently you are not being told everything that you think to be true." I don't know where to start on this rant. "that you think to be true" adds nothing to the statement and make no sense at all. I can only guess that at the least you are saying Matt is withholding facts to hide the truth OR at most you are saying he is a liar.

4) Too many other ways to get cell and e-mail addresses--again proof none

5) "How else would I be able to actually prove what he said unless what I am saying is true." I don't know tell me, how can you actually prove what he said, because you may be proving something but it aint about Matt.

6) I also know Matt pretty well and there is no doubt in my mind he would respect your right to an opinion and knows that his job comes with both constructive and unwarranted criticism.

7) As for- "I said we had come to a mutal agreement about them and I still believe that to be true." In no way do I believe yall came to a mutual agreement and all this rambling to prove to us this "truth" and you haven't convinced yourself? ("I still believe")?

I made a comment just to point out that the criticism was not corrective. Plain and simple. You decided to make petty personal and character attack. So what you are "proving" is not what Matt is or what I am but who and what you are. I assure you the more you defend yourself the more you hurt yourself.
December 12, 2010 at 12:01pm
Goober the attack on you is personal because you are exactly what I have said all along an idiot. I made an opinion about the game and I stand by it. If you had actually been at the game you might have an understanding about it, but you weren't there were you?

Matt and I have had two different conversations at this point and I am waiting on the third at any time now. He doesn't need you to defend him in any way, I am sure he is quite capable of doing it himself. No one but you is ranting, I am just defending my right to my opinion on a basketball game that I attended and you weren't at and have no knowledge of anything that happened at it.

Again, I go back to the point that nothing you have said is basketball related. You are just some random idiot who likes to argue with people who you don't know and have no idea what they are talking about anyway. And it is you who hurts yourself more every time you post a comment and not me.

Matt and I are cool. I know I have heard what he has to say and he knows I have my right to an opinion on the game as well, because he told me so. I don't need your belief in my words with him or anyone else's for that matter. I respect him as a coach, I just simply disagreed with putting in three Sophomores and letting Warren County catch up. Nothing more, nothing less.

goober you seriously need to get a life dude!
December 12, 2010 at 12:22pm
You are right about one thing- I have never made a comment about basketball. My statement is you wouldn't know corrective criticism if it jumped up and bite you. You are just a rude, opinionated, egotistical simpleton. - plain and simple.
December 12, 2010 at 12:37pm
Seems this discussion is getting ridiculous. A person stated an opinion. People do that all of the time. He believes his opinion has validity. Other disagree. That happens all of the time too. I would like to think people can discuss things civilly, but many times is seems they can not.

I shudder to think what would happen if I expressed an opinion about something that is really important, like how much government spends, how poorly it is accounted for and used, and how it always wants more, more, more while at the same time wasting so much of what we give it. Doing so might cause an uproar!
December 12, 2010 at 1:34pm
Wrong Kevin-Got totally ridiculous long before now. I love to toy with someone who wants to take such a firm stand on a topic which is not defendable. Guess I'll go play in the snow--us idiots love that kind of stuff too!
December 12, 2010 at 8:01pm
goober, never argue with a fool, after awhile no one knows who the fool is.
December 13, 2010 at 6:02am
"You are just a rude, opinionated, egotistical simpleton. - plain and simple."

goober, may I be the first to second your opinion of Josh!
December 13, 2010 at 12:16pm
Indeed ften and I hope my persistence will be viewed as only a laps into foolish. Reminds me of a few quotes-

Only two things infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I am not to sure about the former. (A. Einstein)

Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects. (W. Rogers)

The trouble with the world is the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.(?)

Dailyreader- My intent was not to resort to or lower myself to name calling but my point was not being taken and in frustration I felt I needed to fire back. Kinda reminded me of that dog in the yard chasing his own tail. After many attempts, he wanted it so badly and them when he caught it he was not sure what to do with it. What did you mean earlier when you addressed josh as josh aka...aka...aka...?

December 13, 2010 at 12:28pm
What dailyreader means is that he thinks he knows that josh has several different screen names, but as far as I can tell he (josh) doesn't and he (dailyreader) doesn't have or offer definitive proof.
