Auburntown’s 14-year-old Dylan Hollandsworth has been selected as Wish Ambassador for this year’s Season of Wishes campaign.  Each week day from November 29-December 15, a Wish Ambassador’s story will be featured in area media during the campaign.

Dylan’s story is being featured on Friday, December 3rd. The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Middle Tennessee is presenting these stories in order to both encourage families to contact their office if they have a child with a life-threatening medical condition, and to inspire Middle Tennesseans to give of their time, talents, or treasures to support its mission to grant a wish to every eligible child in Middle Tennessee.

Dylan’s Season of Wishes® story is presented by Next Generation Underwriters.

Dylan’s Story

Wish: To Go To Grand Opening of Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios

Auburntown’s 14-year-old Dylan has Down Syndrome and is in remission having completed treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma.  During treatment and most days since, Dylan has enjoyed watching all the Harry Potter movies.

He had only one wish -- to visit the world of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade at Universal Studios.

Dylan and his family were granted his wish on opening day of the Wizarding World where he met Daniel Radcliffe and all the stars from the movie — a true once-in-a-lifetime experience!  His favorite moment was in Ollivander’s Wand Shop where after a few tests, a very special magic wand selected Dylan as its rightful owner.

About the Season of Wishes® Campaign

Season of Wishes is a national holiday-themed umbrella campaign designed to activate corporations and consumers to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation®   during the most prolific spending period of the year. The campaign focuses on granting wishes for children across the United States during the holiday season.

The Middle Tennessee Make-A-Wish®  chapter is celebrating a Season of Wishes®  by telling wish stories and encouraging individuals to support businesses and events that are raising funds to help grant more wishes.

The average cost of a wish is $6,000, but any amount can help grant a wish and provide hope, strength, and joy to a child with a life-threatening illness. Anyone can join the Make-A-Wish Foundation® in celebrating the spirit of holiday giving. You can discover the many ways to share the power of a wish® with family and friends during the Season of Wishes®  at  www.midtnwishes.org/seasonofwishes.

About Granting Wishes
Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.

There are four steps to granting a wish. Each step builds on the next to help create the amazing experiences that delight wish kids and their families. A wish experience is frequently a source of inspiration for children undergoing difficult medical treatments and a positive force that helps them overcome their obstacles. A wish experience is often more than a dream come true: It’s the catalyst that rekindles their belief in themselves and the promise of their future.

Step 1: Referral
We rely on medical professionals, parents and children themselves for referrals. Children older than 2 1⁄2 years old and younger than 18 at the time of referral who have not received a wish from another wish-granting organization may be eligible for a wish.

Step 2: Medical eligibility
A child’s medical eligibility is determined with the help of the treating physician. To receive a wish, the child must be diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition – i.e., a progressive, degenerative or malignant condition that has placed the child’s life in jeopardy.

Step 3: Finding the true wish
We send one of our enthusiastic wish teams to learn the child’s one true wish. These passionate volunteers connect with wish children and help explore their imaginations for the experience that will delight and inspire them.

Step 4: Creating joy
Wish managers and wish granting volunteers work together to ensure that each child receives an unforgettable experience driven by the child's creativity. Each wish is as special and unique as the wish child who dreams it. It’s an incredible experience that enriches not just the lives of the children and their families, but often an entire community.

To refer a Middle Tennessee child with a life-threatening medical condition, call 615-259-2324 Ext 111. (If you are a friend or relative of a potentially eligible child, we ask that you speak to the family personally and encourage them to call us directly).
