Historical Society To Feature Tate As Guest Speaker

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:07 pm by admin

Teacher Teresa Tate with Mrs. and Lt. Col. (ret.) Hugh Chaney, parents of Arthur Fletcher Chaney.

The Cannon County Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Adams Memorial Library, in the basement meeting room.

The guest speaker will be Teresa Tate, a retired Cannon County High teacher of 38 years — all at West Side Elementary School. She graduated from MTSU on a Saturday and started Teacher-In-Training on Monday and continued there until she retired.

Her topic at the meeting Sept. 14 will be about a class project that was part of a school trip to Washington, D.C. and New York.

A highlight of the trip was a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Mrs. Tate and the students, using the book LETTERS TO VIETNAM ad a "web site to the Vertical Wall," selected a name for the students to research and to find on the wall.

The veteran selected was Arthur Fletcher Chaney of the 1st Cavalry Division, and the son of Lt. Col. and Mrs. Hugh Chaney. Now, the story begins to develop into a "moving and memorable" experience for the students and their teacher.

Mrs. Tate will tell "the rest of the story" at the meeting.

Teresa is the wife of Joe Tate and the daughter of James N. Lassiter and the late Jane McFerrin Lassiter. She is a long-time student of local and area history and of the Civil War.

Sandwiches and other treats will be served at 6:30, with the meeting beginning at 7.
