Cathy Rogers Brandon passed away at her beloved home on Cripple Creek on August 6th, surrounded by those who love her, after an extended illness. Cathy was born on June 1st, 1950 and was the youngest daughter and 12th of Clarence Dowell and Lois Knox Rogers’s 13 children. She is survived by her husband, Alvin Wyly Brandon, Sr., children, Beth (Jerry) Brandon Blankenship, Alvin (Jennie) Wyly Brandon, Jr., and Jon Marc (Abigail) Brandon; special son, Tim Dutkanicz, siblings, Joyce (Tommy) Harris, Joan (Bill) Bryson, Mark (Jean Anne) Rogers; seven grandchildren, Katie Beth (Ethan) Stanfield, Emilie (Chris Keys) Blankenship, William Blankenship, A.B. Brandon, Bella Brandon, Sadie Brandon, Lucy Brandon, and Mabel Brandon and two great-grandchildren Sterling and Opal Stanfield; along with many special nieces, nephews, family members, caregivers, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Dowell & Lois Knox Rogers; in-laws Sterling & Jewell Lowe Brandon; her sister-in-law Angela Brandon, and her siblings, Hazel Beck, Ovie Hollis, Jean Mathews, Joe Rogers, Jackie Rogers, Ray Rogers, Gail Rogers, Lynda Strickland, and Martha Rogers.
Mrs. Brandon was an owner operator for Rutherford County Transportation as a school bus driver for 38 years. She also had worked at Rutherford County Coop Garden Center for many years.
Cathy’s life was made up of many puzzle pieces, her love of baking, canning, gardening, and homemaking; her love of parties and decorating for holidays; her love of her home on the farm; her love of going on long walks and dragging her beloved caretaker of the last 6 years, Wendy Brown, along for the ride; her love of ladybugs; her love of the Kitrell community and the Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department’s Country Ham Breakfast; her love of her title, “Granny Blue”, affectionately given to her by her special grandson, AB; her love of the inner city ministry; her love of her church family at Science Hill Church of Christ; her love of caring for others - whether it be for her mother, her father-in-law, Sterling Brandon, or for her sister-in-law, Angela Brandon; her love of travel - especially trips to Florida with her grandchildren to visit family, to Gatlinburg with her nieces, and anywhere with her sisters and special niece, Sherry; her love of coffee and sweet tea; her love of her childhood home, Readyville and all of the cherished memories she had of growing up there surrounded by her siblings and close friend, Betty Reed; her love of driving the school bus and every child along her route; her love of her siblings and nieces and nephews; and of course, the love of her best friend of 60 years, her husband Alvin, whose love and devotion has shown no bounds during her illness.
But the edge puzzle pieces, the ones Cathy put down first and surrounded every other piece of her life with, was her love and devotion to Jesus and living each day to be more like him. She never wanted to forget Jesus and her hope is that no one else would either.
