Joe Herbert Sissom

May 29, 2025 at 07:29 am by kready

Joe Herbert Sissom, 89, of Bradyville left his earthly tent to go to his permanent home with his Lord Wednesday, May 28, 2025. A native of Cannon Co., he was the son of the late Floyd D. Sissom and Elsie Elizabeth Parker Sissom. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Ed Sissom, Bud Sissom, Garland Sissom, Clyde Sissom, J.T. Sissom and Jean Bandy.
He and his wife, Joyce Miller Sissom were married for 63 years, creating a family and a legacy of love. He was the best kind of Dad, absolutely delighting in his family and loving us with his life. He was always willing to do anything for any of us.
If you knew our Dad, then you knew how much he loved Jesus. He was bold and fearless about sharing his faith. Even in these last difficult months, he was always asking nurses and anyone he could where they stood with the Lord.
We’ve heard stories of him in his younger, wild days. We never knew that Dad. Our Dad was like the man in parable who found the pearl of great price and sold all he had to buy it (Matthew 13:45-46). His life was a testimony to the Lord and we believe he got up every day thinking about he could do for Jesus.
We know that sometimes in this life, he felt he wasn’t good enough, that he didn’t have enough education. But we believe that when he crossed over into his new life, that he received a hero’s welcome, surrounded by all those who came to Christ through his faithful witness. We believe “his Lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a few things. Enter into the joy of thy Lord!” (Matthew 25:23)
For all of you that he pastored through the years, he loved you, too. He prayed over you, cared for you, grieved with you and carried your burdens. Thank you to all those who loved him back.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Joyce and his two children, Tammy (Randall) Harris and Gaylon (Suzette) Sissom. He had seven grandchildren, Amanda (Lee) Baker, Emily (Phillip) Mullins, Abbey (Camron) Bond, Anna Grace Sissom (Timothy Stayskal) and Jack, Luke and Nick Harris.; six great grandchildren, Anneliese and Lainey Baker, Grayson, Maddox and Banks Mullins and Bru Bond. Also surviving are his brothers, Duane “Doc” Sissom of Middleton, OH., June Sissom Sadler of Murfreesboro, and Jerry (Nancy) Sissom of Bradyville.
Bro. Joe was a pastor of 50 years and a member of the Hollow Springs Community Church. He loved the Tennessee Vols, going fishing, playing golf and watching his grandchildren play ball.
His family will receive friends Thursday, May 29, 2025 from 4:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at Hollow Springs Community Church and Friday, May 30, 2025 beginning at 9:00 A.M at Woodbury Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Ed Sissom and Bro. Greg Mitchell officiating, Interment will follow at Gilley Hill cemetery. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
