Roadside signs can prove valuable and canny tools to convey information, sentiment and belief. Whether they are painted religious banners, political advertising signs, or advertising marquees, the signage of a community reveals a people's loves and dislikes, their chosen religious beliefs and their choices for recreation and commerce. Photographer and folklorist Tom Rankin, believing that the character and morals of a community could be discerned by the signs that dot the roadside of a community sought to document these signs in their environment, and as a result, effectively conveyed the mores of some of the inhabitants of eastern Tennessee Appalachian Mountains. Tom Rankin and Brent Cantrell collaborated to create Expressions of Place: Roadside Signs.  Rankin’s evocative gelatin silver prints combine with Cantrell's enlightened text to create a portrait of life in southeast Tennessee.   This project was created by support from the Tennessee Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Admission to this photography exhibit is free. The gallery is open 10 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
