WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Cybersecurity Enhancement Act, a bipartisan bill to improve online security in both the public and private sector. Congressman Bart Gordon cosponsored the legislation, and helped develop it as chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology. “Increased Internet use presents new opportunities for families and businesses in Middle Tennessee and across the nation, but it can also create new vulnerabilities,” Gordon said. “This bill will strengthen cybersecurity from all sides.” The Cybersecurity Enhancement Act strengthens national security and addresses business and industry needs through improved cybersecurity technologies and increased awareness. The bill would support small businesses and everyday computer users by providing technical advice through cybersecurity awareness programs. It would also support industry by investing in research that will improve the security of critical industrial control systems and identity management systems. These business-friendly measures have won the endorsement of the Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations. The bill would also develop the cybersecurity workforce by creating college and university scholarships for students pursuing work in the fields of IT and network security. “This bill will help to develop the next generation of the cybersecurity workforce,” Gordon said. “These are skilled, high-paying jobs that fill a real demand, and they will be crucial to our economic and national security going forward.” Gordon has championed education programs that direct students into high-demand technical fields through his landmark legislation, the America COMPETES Act. He has also co-sponsored other measures to improve cybersecurity, including the Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act and the Social Security Number Protection Act.
