Funeral services for May Helen Gunter Jernigan, age 79, of Wartrace, TN will be conducted Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Coffee County Funeral Chapel with her son, Reverend Bob Jernigan and Brother Danny Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 31, 2010 from 5:00-9:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jernigan passed away Saturday, August 28, 2010 at her residence. She was born November 5, 1930 in Cannon County, Tennessee the daughter of the late Richard Gunter and Lela Campbell Gunter. She was raised in the Short Mountain community of Cannon County. She retired in 1973 from Burrough’s Corporation after 21 years of service. She was also a true loving homemaker who loved to cook for her family. She was famous for her yummy cookies and cabbage rolls as well as her canning and freezing most everything from her beautiful vegetable garden. She enjoyed her flower gardens as well as bird watching and nature walks. In later years, she worked at several local convenience markets to include Top Stop, Midway Market and Long’s Market. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Hurricane Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Leon “Bob” Jernigan who passed away January 31, 2009, a daughter, Linda Hayter Parham and brothers and sisters, Jean Woodard, Margie Anderson, Earlean Gilbert, Sonny Gunter and Don Gunter.

Survivors include three children, Robert Leon Jernigan, Jr. and wife, Jackie of Ivy Bluff; Billy Joe Jernigan and wife Carolyn of Hillsboro, TN; Deborah Ann Jernigan Young and husband, Charlie of Herrin, IL; 10 grandchildren, Patrick Hayter, Shirley Hayter, Brian (Ashley) Parham, JoJo Jernigan Grinstead, Robert (Johnna) Jernigan, III, Brandon (Angela) Jernigan, Angie Young (Lynn) Keaton, Shannon Jernigan (Richard) Hill, Dawn Jernigan, Debra Jernigan (Roy) Jennings and Lori Jernigan (Tony) Newsom; great-grandchildren, Kristoffer (Deadra) Hayter and Preston Hayter, Courtney and Caleb Parham, Whitney Jernigan, Cody and Hunter Hill, Malik Jernigan, Maleeah Jennings, Shaleise Jernigan, Payton Newsom, Alex Jernigan, Abby and J.R. Grinstead, Ashton, Austin, Avery, Micah, Matthew Jernigan and Kristopher Keaton and David Keaton and one great-great-grandson, Keith Lee Hayter. Also surviving are two sisters, Virginia (Wilburn) Shields of Sullivan, KY and Katie ( Marshall) Heady of Black Ford, KY and two dear, longtime friends, Ruth Mayo and Ruth Banks and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and loving family and friends.

I wish the family well and am sorry for their loss. My prayers are with you. My mother, Ruby Kirby Poss grew up on short Mountain and loved returning to visit.
