Cora Burks Erwin, 89, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at her home following an extended illness.

A resident of Woodbury, she was born in Bradyville.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Juanita O. Burks of Woodbury and Violet Stallard of KY; a brother-in-law. Frank Erwin of KY; a niece, Alicea Burks (Ken) Moore of Manchester; nephews, Tom (Carolyn) Burks Jr. of Murfreesboro, Ronny Burks, Richard (Karen) Burks and Randy (Sandra) Brandon, all of Woodbury

Also surviving  are several great nieces and nephews.

Ms. Cora was preceded in death by her parents, James Smartt Burks and Fannie Gertrude Todd Burks; husband, Troy Erwin; sister, Lurene Brandon; brother, Tom S. Burks Sr.; and nephew, Jimmy Brandon.

A member of 1st Baptist Church, she was a retired postal employee. She was a volunteer with the Stones River Hospital and with the Red Cross Blood Mobile.

Funeral swrvices will be held at the 1st Baptist Church of Woodbury at  11:00 a.m. on Friday March 11, 2011 with Bro. J. L. “Pete” Ford and Bro. Bobby Zumbro. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Woodbury Funeral Home and Friday until time of service at Woodbury First Baptist Church

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Todd Family Cemetery, American Diabetes Assoc. or American Heart Assoc.

Great nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

A GRAND Lady who sat on the front row of THE BASKETBALL GAMES for many years.......and an honor to have known MS Cora.......with lots of fond memories and love to a lady with a warm smile and personality PLUS......thanks for being part of our lives and giving so much to Cannon County.....Sarah & Jubba Womack

The wonderful personal conributions of Cora to our county and it's citizens cannot be reasonably measured. Always the epitome of a lady, she went about her chosen, benevolent, activities only for the betterment of others.
She never sought fame, glory or recognition. Her reward was that that the lives of others
were better because of her efforts. Even when the ravages of age and health slowed her, she continued to push, to perservere,
to do because others were in need.
We are better for it.

While certainly the fulfillment of God's plan, her passing, at the time of the girls state tournament, is some sort of irony. Cora loved her basketball and the players. If Heaven has a portal, I can almost visualize her, looking down at MTSU today, most likely sitting beside of Annie Cox, and with no pain or suffering, cheering on her beloved Lionettes. Hey, Lions. She loved you equally.

She will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.Our deepest sympathy to the family.

She was a fine lady and a wonderful person. Cora was a true friend and counselor to many generations of young people--she will be missed. Tommy Bratten

Cora loved young people. I have many fond memories of Miss Cora hauling us girls around in her big station to ball games or any where else we needed a chaparone. She was a generous, loving friend and she will indeed be missed.
