X-country starts strong

Cannon County’s cross-country teams are off to strong starts after their first two matches of the season.

The Lions finished 11th out of 29 teams in the Mahaney Division at the Voyles Classic at Sharp Springs Park in Smyrna last week.

Of the 264 runners in the field, Cannon County’s Marshall McReynolds finished 20th overall to the lead the Lions with a time of 18:09.93 in the 5K race. Senior Jordan Turney was not far behind, finishing 23rd with am 18:17.78.

Jake Burdick (96th, 20:30.63), Clay Luker (98th, 20:32.72) and Jake Hoskins (125th, 21:36.81) also had strong performances and factored into the scoring for the Lions. Umar Rasul (131, 21:42.91), T.J. Paul (136, 21:48.95), Devin Gilpatrick (143, 22:01.24), Walker Hatfield (156, 22:35.80), and Sam Sissom (159, 22:42.86) also participated.

The Lionettes also had a strong showing. They finished 10th out of 23 teams in the Benson Division at the Voyles Classic. The Lionettes were the highest-finishing A/AA team.

Freshman Hannah Whited finished 28th out of 192 participants to lead the Lionettes with a time of 22:08.45. Nipping at her heels was teammate Elva Magana, who finished 36th with a 22:51.17. Macy Clements finished 68th with a 24:26.61, Kristen McReynolds (26:54) was 114th, followed by Sarah Hickman (26:57) at 116th to lead the Cannon County scoring. Katie Hickman (128, 28:12), Autumn King (131, 28:25), and Konner Duke (165, 32:33) also participated for the Lionettes.

Earlier in the week the Lionettes finished seventh out of 13 teams at the Macon County Invitational. Whited led the Lionettes and finished 15th out of 102 participants overall. 

The Lions finished eighth out of 14 teams and ahead of all A/AA teams at Macon County. Marshall McReynolds led the way, finishing seventh out of 110 participants overall with an 18:08.30. Jordan Turney also had a Top 20 finish, placing 13th. Briar Jakes, Devin Gilpatrick and T.J. Paul all had Top 20 finishes in the junior varsity meet.

Cannon County’s boys finished sixth out of 14 teams in the 3,200 meter middle school meet. It was the first meet for Cannon County’s middle grades program.

Corey Seymore led Cannon County and finished fifth overall out of 95 participants. Triston Morton also had a Top 20 finish, placing 15th overall. Blake Bush, Noah Pence and Bradley Vickers also participated for the Lions.
