Crime can occur anywhere, even at the Cannon County Jail.

Brittany Lynn Ross, 3331 Hollow Springs Rd., Bradyville, who is serving time for violation of probation, was charged Aug. 16 with theft under $500 by the Cannon County Sheriff's Department.

Ross is accused of stealing a candy bar from fellow prisoner Lisa Pyles, who is awaiting a grand jury appearance on charges of passing worthless checks.

According to the report filed by Deputy Anthony Young, Ross committed the alleged offense "with the intent to deprive the owner of property without effective consent."

Ross will appear in Cannon County General Sessions Court on Oct. 5, 2010 to answer the charge.

Can I just buy a candy bar and give it to Ms. Pyles and save the county un-necessary tax dollars by wasting gas, time and effort in transporting Ms. Ross to the courthouse to answer for stealing a candy bar?

Not to mention the effort it took to write the complaint or the time of the judge to hear it.

It is worth a $1.50 from me to save the county the time and money this will cost. Tell me what kind she wants and where to send it to.

I am not trying to downgrade the idea behind someone stealing or someone being punished for stealing, but I do believe a better method could have been used to satisfy the crime vs. a court apperance. Perhaps losing her privileges?

I hope Judge Melton would dismiss this case and scold the deputy that brought the charges. I know it is not right to steal, but this is silly and as stated above, I believe there is a better way to handle this case than brining charges. They should think about all the expenses involved just to hear this case. Maybe this is why someone did not get re-elected.
