Quick action (and footwork) by Woodbury Police Officer Chris Brown with the assist of two Cannon County Sheriff's deputies outside Quick Shop Market led the the apprehension of a man who attempted to evade arrest last week.

Following the incident, Ricky Christopher Cooper, 5921 Hollow Springs Rd., Bradyville, was charged with his 13th offense of driving on a revoked license, evading arrest, failure to show proof of insurance and failure to obey a traffic control signal.

Officer Brown described the events which unfolded the morning of Aug. 6 in his incident report:

"I was at Quick Shop Market, standing outside on the sidewalk, when I observed the 1990 Honda Civic being driven by Ricky Christopher Cooper run through the intersection of Main Street and McCrary Street while his light was red. He was coming from S. McCrary St. onto N. McCrary St. He then pulled into the parking lot of the store and Dustin Rogers was in the passenger seat.

"Upon approaching the vehicle on foot I asked Mr. Cooper for his license, registration and proof of insurance. He stated it was in the back of the car and he was going to get it, so I let him proceed to get out in order to get the information.

"I also asked Mr. Rogers for his identification, as he was already out of the vehicle. He said they were coming to buy cigarettes. When I met Mr. Rogers at the front of the vehicle I noticed Mr. Cooper briskly walking away from the car towards N. McCrary St. I then asked him where he was going and I told him to stop and when I did this he took off running towards the alley between N. McCrary St. and the Square.

"(Cannon County Sheriff's) Deputy Tommy Barker was in the store buying a drink and I got on the radio and requested him to stay with Mr. Rogers and I advised dispatch I was in foot pursuit with Mr. Cooper.

"He had a good head start on me and I lost visual contact with him. Deputy (Eric) Moss and Deputy Barker both assisted with searching the area and none of us made contact with Mr. Cooper. At this time we gave up the search and I went back to the Quick Shop and called for a wrecker to tow the car.

"When talking to Mr. Rogers and filling out the tow slip for the car I heard someone hollering from W. Main St. and walking up the sidewalk. I identified the subject as being Mr. Cooper, the subject who was driving the car and took off on foot. I hollered at him to to come back to the parking lot and that I needed to speak with him.

"At this time he took off running behind the building towards the alley. I took off after him again at 2:42 a.m. and advised the deputies he showed back up and took off running again. The deputies came in through the alley and found him on top of the roof of the Lions Den Pizza in the back side.

"I ordered him down repeatedly and he refused to comply and said he did nothing wrong and we were harassing him. The deputies went up the roof access ladder and started towards him. When doing this he went towards the front of the building.

"I went from the back to the front through the alley accessway and when I rounded the corner he jumped from the roof down to the ground on the Square and took off running again.

"I chased the subject from this location, across W. Main St., and around the back of the buildings on the other side of the Square. At this time I closed the gap on him and was about ten feet behind him. He rounded the corner at the dead end behind the building and tried to jump on the low portion of the rear of the roof and slipped.

"I was right behind him and told him not to move when he tried to get up. Upon doing this he started to regain his footing and turned around with his right arm raised towards me at which time I used my chemical weapon to stop him from doing any harm to me or having to use physical force on the subject to stop him. When he was sprayed he sat down and said 'you got me, you got me."

Brown cuffed Cooper and took him back Quick Shop. Cooper denied he was driving and said he was on the top of Lions Den Pizza waiting to watch the sunrise.

Cooper was taken to the sheriff's department and booked.
