NASHVILLE, TN – Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Chris Devaney released the following statement on President Obama’s decision today to support gay marriage:

"After playing politics for years with the issue of same-sex marriage, President Obama has finally made his true position known. The majority of Tennesseans do not support the president on this issue and I'm curious if Tennessee Democrats will stand by their president on this one."

Glad to see Tennessee Republicans standing behind a traditional marriage of a man and woman.
Tennessee ranks in the top ten for divorcing along with those other stalwarts of the Bible Belt--Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia with Florida joining in.
Wonder why they don't prctice what they preach?

Hey old buddy! Did you finally get out of solitary confinement?

Not sure why divorce rate has anything to do with same sex marriage, but I never really understand where you drift from time to time.

What would really be good is if we could get people like the Democrats to practice what they preach and not "evolve" so much.

Maybe then we could have it explained why things like abortion is considered a choice and a unborn fetus is not a "real life" unless you want to go to the White House and take a tour and have to count the unborn baby as a live person and even name it.

Our ever changing President and the Democratic Parties views are like a Forrest Gump box of chocolates because you never know what you are going to get.

I guess it all depends on what he needs to say to get re-elected.

Corey, if you receive the Tennessean, read yesterday's FAITH & VALUES column.

What was espoused in that column summarizes my values and my faith. It also expresses the faith and values of a great many Democrats like me.

And Corey, I was sure you wouldn't understand the hypocrisy. Tunnel vision does that to most people.

MMW I have no doubt what your values and faith are because you have made it clear time and again that you were an atheist and a die hard liberal.

I do understand the hypocrisy and tunnel vision you have because you have explained it very well under both of your pen names dailyreader and MMW.

Hypocrisy is stating you don't believe in GOD and then acting like you are offended by people who have values that go back to the beginning of time such as the marriage between a man and a woman.

You just want to criticize, condemm and belittle people for having faith in something you don't believe in or can possibly understand. That's your game and that is your tunnel vision.

In all of the times you have written comments under both of your pen names you have never offered a solution to any problem you write about and you have always been negative toward others. I would say that is the very definition of tunnel vision.

If you have a Bible, read it. What is espoused in that book expresses the faith and values of a great many PEOPLE, both Democrats and Republicans like me.

I will take the Bible over the Tennessean any day.

MMW I read the article you suggested and by your own words it is hypocritical to suggest you are an atheist who doesn't believe in GOD one time and now say you believe like a moderate Christian and have the values you suggest they have.

What you and so many other liberals fail to understand is the Bible is the literal Word of GOD. It is unchanging, it is infallible and it is everlasting. It does not matter what I believe, it does not matter what you believe and it does not matter what anyone else believes. What matters is what GOD'S Word says.

You say that you believe as the article said that “marriage between consenting adults should be perfectly legal regardless of sexual orientation. Legal protections for both heterosexual and same-sex couples should be equal” but that is contrary to GOD’S Word.

Had GOD intended men to marry men he would have created Adam and Steve in the Garden of Eden and not Adam and Eve.

You can try to change it, bend it, disbelieve it, refute it and even deny it, but the Word of GOD has been here long before you and I and will be here long after we are both gone.

And what's even more important is that ALL of us will have to answer to it when our time comes.

Corey: I suspect Clarence Darrow would have had a field day with you from T-Rex on the ark to 144 hours creation and who was Cain's wife.

Perhaps, but Darwin was an idiot who believed that something came from nothing and we all evolved from an amoeba over millions of years despite the evidence that if the earth was that old the population would be so staggering there would be no room for anyone to walk. That really says a lot about his intelligence or anyone else who believes that nonsense.

Darwin’s theory of evolution had as much chance of magically happening as if you took a flashlight completely apart, placed all of the parts in a box and shook it until all of the parts landed in the exact order they needed to be in, the batteries fell in place, the end caps screwed on and the light turned on.

As far as Cain's wife, the Bible doesn't say who she was or how long it was before Cain got married. It could have been 200 years for all anyone knows. When you talk about specifics in the Bible you need to speak when the Bible speaks and be silent when the Bible is silent. You follow that rule and you will go a long way toward understanding theology.

Corey, is that rule "speak where the Bible speaks and be silent when the Bible is silent" from the Bible or did you just make that up to silence all those who question anything?

MMW I have little doubt that I could ever silence you or anyone else who does not believe in GOD.

Speak when the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent is simply a way to help people like yourself understand that no one, not you, I or anyone else should add to or take away from GOD's Word.

I invite and encourage you to ask questions. I actually enjoy that because it creates debate and if done so in a manner that is non-evasive then that can be a very valuable learning tool.

If, as in most cases, your intent is just to argue for the sake of arguing then I doubt I would spend very little time going back and forth with you on a subject you reject by your own words.

As I said above, GOD's Word speaks through the Bible and it is infallible, it is unchanging and without error. It does not need anyone to add to it or take away from it or speak where it does not.

Corey, while you have said the Bible is the literal word of God, you might remember that there are no original manuscripts available and when you read the Bible you are reading what men(no women allowed until recently) have decided what God’s words were.

It isn’t God that deceives men and women, it has always been those who believe they have a lock on what God really said, who do the deceiving.

Look no farther than Woodbury. The multiplicity of churches here in the community reflects the problem we have in agreeing on what God said and what He wants us to do, not only when it comes to worshiping him but in treating our fellow man. The Catholics have a number of books in their Bible you won’t find in yours and the Mormons have added books into their teachings that differ from the KJV. Every sect out there sees something different.

Locally we have two Churches of Christ an a couple of variants of Baptists and why? If fundamentalists like these can not even agree on the meaning and intent in Jesus’s teachings then isn’t it reasonable to believe that those involved, not only in the beginning but through the many, many centuries, added in their own slant as they copied and recopied and recopied what someone wrote at the start.

Jesus’s teachings (as we read them now) are the most pure and sublime that men and women have ever read and yet we can not even agree on how to take those words and fold them into our daily conduct even within the church itself.

It is the extremists, as it has always been, that feel that have a corner on what God had intended for man to do and then try to drown out the voices of the moderates

Some form of Christianity is practiced by about 30% of the world’s population and we need to remember there are those who differ greatly from what we believe and for us to dogmatically insist we have the only route to heaven seems to say they aren’t God’s children and we are the only ones who can take that trip.

By the way, if you recall the writers or scribes of the Bible noted that God repented, God was sorry, he had created man and later also said he had changed His mind.

MMW there are many documents throughout history that have no original manuscripts available to read, but that does not make them untrue or changed in any way. Our own original first draft of the Declaration of Independence is missing, yet we know what those words say today because of what was passed down and given to us by the people who were originally a part of making that document. Why would it be so impossible to believe that GOD’S Word would be any different?

My faith tells me that the Bible as we know it is the inspired Word of GOD written by men who were part of GOD’S plan. My faith tells me that it is without error and everything in it is there because GOD wanted it there and anything not in it is not because GOD did not want it there. I believe that GOD used certain men to tell His story. Once they reached a certain point He had them stop. There are multiple versions of the same stories in the Bible because there were different men GOD used to tell it to different groups of people, but they do not contradict. They tell the same story throughout the entire book beginning with Genesis and ending in Revelations.

I agree with you that GOD does not deceive. That is impossible for Him to do. That is the job of the Prince of Lies and the beginning of sin I might add in the Garden of Eden. It is man that tries to bend it, change it, go around it and deny GOD’S Word. It is not the Bible or GOD who does that.

The last count I had we have approximately 25 Churches of Christ in Woodbury, not two. We also have many Baptist, Methodist, Seventh Day Adventist, Church of God, etc. as well. We have that many for many different reasons. When established, the lack of roads and travel made it easier to have local churches in specific areas. We also had a period of time when evangelic preachers flooded our areas in the south and helped to grow many of these churches. Just because there are different churches in our area does not change the Word of God. Nor does it mean that many of them do not agree. It speaks more to the idea that we do agree considering the majority interact well with each other.

I do not consider myself an extremist to think or speak that there is only one way to heaven because that is a true statement. Everyone has a commonality and that is death. Everyone will be judged by the Word of GOD. Everyone will bend a knee and confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of GOD. Jesus said that “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity”. Why do you feel it is extreme for me to quote Jesus’s answer to people who do not obey His commandments and expect to have everlasting life?

My definition of an extremist is a religion or person who uses their belief in a manner that destroys life or property simply to justify their belief that if you don’t agree with them then you or your property have no right to exist on this earth. Me telling you that Jesus said “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” does not make me an extremist at all. You and many others see what you want to see because you don’t want to see or hear the truth.

How you believe is your choice. How I believe is mine. How you practice it is also a choice we both make. But, as I said before it does not matter what I believe or you believe or anyone else believes, it always comes back to what GOD says.

Your last statement I will not comment on until you quote the scripture you are referring to. That prevents us from going down a tangent when I know what we are discussing.

I can't name the verse, but I believe he is referring to Genesis when God brought the flood for the first half of his sentence, and for the second, He was going to destroy Israel at Mt. Sinai when they had made the golden calf, and reestablish his covenant through Moses. Due to Moses' pleadings He repented (I believe that is the wording He used) and didn't destroy Israel, although their actions were costly nonetheless. Both found in the Old Testament. I don't remember anything being mentioned about God repenting in the New Testament.

And I agree with what you have said Corey, right on.
