Emily Sissom became Tennessee's career leader for 3-pointers with 363 after knocking down five in No. 10-ranked Cannon County's 84-55 win against Forrest at Robert A. Harris Gymnasium Tuesday night.

Sissom became Tennessee's all-time leader in 3-point field goals made in all classifications when she connected from the right wing with 1:38 remaining for her fifth trey. She had tied the record with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2:53 remaining.

The previous mark of 362 by Melissa Ervin, who prepped at Sullivan East High School, had stood since 2001. Only four Tennessee girls prep players have ever made more than 300 3-point field goals in a career.

"It's an honor to be the all-time 3-point leader in Tennessee because there have been a lot of good players from this state through the years," said Sissom, who recently became only the third player in school history to surpass the 2,000-point mark for a career. "My teammates have done a great job getting me shots and getting me the ball when I'm open or this would have never happened. There would be no records without the great teammates I've played with at Cannon County.

"I knew I was close to the record and Taylor (King) and my sister, Abbey, would do a little countdown after games or stuff. It helps when you know you have the support of your teammates."

It was a night of notable achievements during the Cannon County doubleheader. After Emily Sissom became Tennessee's all-time 3-point leader in the girls game, senior standout Justin Davenport continued his offensive onslaught with a career-high 40-point outburst to lead the Lions to a 78-75 win against No. 6-ranked Forrest.

Davenport was 12-of-21 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and was 13-of-14 from the free-throw line to lead the Lions (18-10). Davenport has scored 37, 32, and 40 in his last three games. During that stretch, he is shooting 60 percent (34-of-57) from the field, including 57 percent (13-of-23) from 3-point range, and averaging 36.3 points.

"I've never had a run of three straight games like this but I'm shooting with a lot of confidence and my teammates are getting me the ball in position to score," Davenport said. "The big thing is that we got the win and got back on the winning track. I will do anything to win."

The Lions needed all 40 of the points to hold off the scrappy Forrest team, which overcame an 11-point second half deficit to close to within three two different times in the final minute, but Heath Simons and Colin Jones connected for four clutch free throws in the final 36 seconds to seal the win.

Cody Ruehlen added 12 and Jared Nave finished with 10 for the Lions.

The Lionettes (21-6) enjoyed a balanced scoring attack with five players reaching double figures in the one-sided win against a talented Forrest team. Taylor King led Cannon County with a 19-point performance, followed by Emily Sissom and Chelsey Payne with 15 each. Lauren Ruehlen tallied 14 points and Abbey Sissom finished with 10 points. The Sissom sisters combined for eight 3-pointers.

Cannon County will play host to Smith County in what will be the final regular-season home game for 12 seniors on the two teams. Those players will be honored on "Senior Night" prior to the girls game at 6 p.m. The teams conclude the regular season at York Saturday with the girls game scheduled to tip at 4 p.m.

Complete recaps of Cannon County's wins against Forrest and a followup on Emily Sissom's record-breaking achievement will appear in the Feb. 15 print edition of The Cannon Courier.

Well said Betty. Too bad they don't talk about the players who play defense, cause turnovers, and get rebounds with the same intensity as they do points scored. Defense is what wins games and as Emily graciously stated, "My teammates have done a great job getting me shots and getting me the ball when I'm open or this would have never happened."

Lindsey and Taylor really worked well together last night. They connected on several good passes and assists. It's amazing what can happen when you play team ball.
