Except for a few minor scratches, a boy who wandered away from his home in Liberty Sunday morning (Sept. 19) was found and returned home in safe condition.

Cannon County Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Young was dispatched to 5044 Sycamore Creek Road at 9:59 a.m. on Sept. 19 for a report of a missing child.

Upon arrival he spoke with the child's mother, Jill Stansbury, who stated that the child (two-year-old Joshua Stansbury, Jr.) had last been seen by his older brother at around 7:30 a.m.

Jill Stansbury told Deputy Young that Joshua was wearing a light blue t-shirt with a smiley face on it and the shirt had "big brother" printed on it. She also said her son was wearing a diaper.

Jill Stansbury also told Young there were two golden retriever dogs that had left the residence with Joshua. She said both were wearing collars for an underground fence. She described her son as having blonde hair and blue eyes and weighing around 35 pounds.

Deputy Young contacted Cannon County Sheriff Darrell Young to apprise him of the situation and also contacted Cannon County Dispatch to have a BOLO (be on the look out) issued.

Deputy Young then went into the woods adjacent to the residence and started searching for the toddler. By this time there were several volunteers that had arrived to help look for the missing child.

One of the volunteers and Deputy Young started searching along the creek close to the residence. After that Deputy Young moved to search the area behind the residence. There were other volunteers along with the child's father, Joshua Stansbury, Sr., who searched the opposite side of the hill from where Deputy Young was looking.

Joshua Jr. was found by his father about 700 feet from the residence on a hillside. The child's only injuries were some minor scratches caused by the underbrush on the property.

Deputy Young again spoke with Jill Stansbury after the child had been found and she stated that the day before her son had wandered off while they were bush hogging the day before. She said it took them a little while to find him then.

A reader contacted the Cannon Courier by e-mail Wednesday with the following information about the incident:

"I am a resident of Sycamore Creek and on Sunday a 2 year old boy went missing from a house down the road. He was found approximately 4 hours later. During the time the neighborhood received a recorded call from the emergency center with a recording of the description of the boy. I did not know if the paper knew about this or not. I did not know the county had this phone service and thought it was really a great thing. So many people showed up for the search. After Jesse (Joshua) was found unharmed it may have been nice if they sent another phone message that all was okay. All day Sunday I had people stopping wanting to know what was going on."

A 2 year old left unsupervised that long? He was also missing the day before the mother said? I'm so glad he was found safe. I just can't believe nothing is being done about him being unsupervised. He is just a baby!

I agree with the person that wrote the e-mail. It would have been nice if a second call had been placed to say all was well.

I agree with tngram. No 2-year old should ever be left unsupervised. There are poisonous snakes and coyotes in that area of the county. I am curious as to why they wait 2 hours to call and report the child was missing?
