Spring is finally here after a harsh last few months of winter weather. Of course that means baseball and softball is being played all over the world. Here at the Cannon Courier, we want to recognize those true all-stars on the diamond but we need your help in order to do so.

Here is what I have in mind, working with league president Jennifer Bane we came up a simple form for each of the teams' coaches and/or team moms to fill out during each game. A version of the form is featured below. The form breaks up the game into innings which each coach will fill their team's score after each half-inning.

Below that is a group of lines which the coaches or team moms will fill out after their game with highlights. For example, all we need is for you to put something like David Hunter had two hits, including a single and a double, or Mike West pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts. You can list as many highlights as you want win or lose but all we ask for is positivity, regardless of what happened in the game.

I will then pick up the forms during the weekend from Ms. Bane, and make a story out of It by the time the Courier comes out on Monday nights. We are scheduled to run the first edition of The Sandlot on May 6.

My main goal with this project is to get kids' names in the newspaper, nothing more and nothing less. When I was their age, I played a few seasons of youth baseball and it meant a lot to get my name in the newspaper. My dad said I was a pretty good second baseman, of course I did not make it to the big show, so I will take his word for it.

That year playing for my dad, who was an assistant, was the most fun playing youth baseball even through our record was not very good. However, what we are trying to do with the publication of The Sandlot is not really about wins or losses, instead we want these players to enjoy their all-star moment. I want them to feel like MLB players Mike Trout, Giancarlo Stanton or Andrew McCutchen for a day.

However, I will not be able to do it with your help, so coaches and team moms please fill out those forms, so I can give these players the recognition they deserve.

If you have any questions or comments, please email me at dhunter@cannoncourier.com.
