The Cannon County Commission will meet for the third time this week in a recessed meeting as the group continues to go over expenditures in the hopes of producing a budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year which began July 1st.
The Commission has been reviewing the budget and approving each section of expenditures by departments. While the majority of the departments covered by the General Fund have now been approved, the stopping point is with the Sheriff's Department budget which is an $465,000 increase due mostly to the desire to increase salaries of the personnel in order to be more comparable to surrounding counties.
Even though funding the sheriff's department and jail requests have not been approved, 5th District Commissioner Kim Davenport after noting that the library is not a public service that county government has to provide attempted to pass a motion that the county not include the library in their general fund budget. Ronnie Mahaffey and Jim Bush agreed and voted to do the same but the other six commission members present shot it down and voted against it.
Tonight's meeting will start at 5:30 in the courtroom of the Cannon County Courthouse.
