Queen of the Quackers Kristin Demos described the Child Advocacy Center’s Duck Derby beginning at noon Saturday, June 11 at the Sportsman’s Club on Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro.

The event launches with a Family Fun Festival at noon. Celebrity ducks will be auctioned off at 4:30 p.m. and 10,000 ducks race at 5:23 p.m. The person who adopted the winning duck will receive $5,000.

Why are you called Queen of the Quackers?

Dreaming about duck numbers eight months prior to the race indicates a mild obsession and therefore my "enthusiasm" for the Quackers has earned me the title of Queen and maybe because I'm a red-headed quacker. It's a rare breed.

Where can I adopt some ducks to race?

From what I hear, this town has YELLOW FEVER!! It's even spread to Cannon County. Check out US Bank, Penny's Closet, The Write Impression, Murfreesboro Toy Company, Demos' Restaurant, Bell Jewelers, MidSouth Bank, Trendy Pieces, Mills Pharmacy, Bojangles (love their chicken too), FirstBank, Reeves-Sain and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

YELLOW FEVER has even spread to Cannon County.  You can adopt your ducks in Woodbury at FirstBank, First National Bank, and the Cannon County Child Advocacy Center.

How are the adoption fees spent?

Proceeds from our big race go to help child abuse victims. These children and their parents and grandparents have a great place to go get help at the Child Advocacy Center. We are proud to float for this great cause especially since the Child Protective Investigative Team has worked together to investigate and prosecute more than 6,000 child abuse, child sexual abuse, and drug endangered children cases in Rutherford and Cannon Counties in the last 10 years,

How are you training for the duck derby?

Fred with F.R.E.D.'s personal training has me in peak form. We work out three times a week and also, Ashley McFarland with McFarland Aesthetic Enhancements has made sure my feather's are filled and flocked in preparation. There'll be no furl in my brow on the big day!

What does a duck eat before the race?

The cicadas have been quite tasty this year but since they are only a 13-year treat we have been mighty quacked out about the chicken and rice soup at Demos. It's a staple for the Duck diet!

How does the chubby design of the rubber duck make it race better?

"A milkshake does a body good" and the ones down at Reeves-Sain sure hit the spot. Basically the rounder the bottom, the better the floatation.

What are your secrets to winning the race?

That $5,000 cash is a nice little incentive to up the GAME and that free condo rental in Orange Beach isn't so bad either. Orange is one of my signature colors.

Do you race with a friend?

Only 9,999 friends this year. Hopefully more will join us next time we swim this river! I just know the bling from Bell Jewelers will be enticement enough to bring more friends out next time around.

Where can I watch the race?

I hear there's a great local viewing spot on the bridge of Medical Center Parkway. I would definitely suggest purchasing your duck whistle at the race so you can cheer your duck on. We love to be "honked" at!

Who will fish the ducks out of the water at the end of the race?

Jason Adreon and Kim Council are our Captain Quack's and they have a whole crew who will guide us to the finish line and safely pull us out of that water. We can't let anyone mess up the coif that Top of Block is going to style us up with on the big day!

What's your favorite duck story?

When Peter Demos fell off the dam, that was pretty funny to watch! And a true duck fan paid a bunch of money for the Kenny Chesney duck at that auction that Bob Parks Auction group does on race day. I wonder how much the ZZ Top duck will bring this year. But I think my favorite Duck Story will be when we adopt out all 10,000 of my yellow buddies, which will be the best story of all!
