Strong storms hit Cannon County, in particular the Woodland/Iconium areas, causing damage and temporarily cutting off electricity to some 2,235 customers.

Snapped power poles and downed trees on electric lines caused 22 different outages in Cannon County on Tuesday, March 21, Middle Tennessee Electric reported. In particular, power lines were down across Jim Cummings Highway near Tommy Parker Road.

A number of homes lost part or all of their roofs across Cannon County and in other cases barns and outbuildings were, in some cases, destroyed.

"The National Weather Service of Nashville confirmed with EMA officials that straight line winds between 95 to 102 mph passed through our county leaving damage to homes, barns, and roadways in its wake. The NWS also confirmed there were no tornado touchdowns, but only the severe straight-line winds," said Justin Harris, director of Cannon County Emergency Management Agency.

Public safety, 911 and utility personnel performed various tasks throughout the evening, night and early hours of the morning to ensure safety and service to the citizens, Harris said.

Cannon County's 911 call center received and answered 166 calls between the hours of 5 p.m. and midnight.

"There were no injuries reported as a result of the storm but only property damage and debris. The CCEMA has been in close coordination with the Cannon county Executive, TEMA, and the National Weather Service to analyze data received and improve on any future events that may occur," the EMA director said.

On Hollis Creek Road, a barn was demolished, leaving the tractor and hay inside untouched. Nearby, a detached carport was blown on top of a home.

Between Woodbury and Centertown, several homes had significant roof damage with trees uprooted and outbuildings destroyed around Lonnie Smith Road and Pleasant View Road. At Mathis Farms on old Highway 70S, the wind lifted the roof off a barn and wrapped it around a nearby phone pole.

Numerous trees were snapped in half on Burt Bergen Road near Bradyville.

On Whipporrill Road, a barn and silo suffered heavy wind damage.

Near Centertown, wind gusts knocked down trees that included a 2-foot in diameter tree that was uprooted. Damage was reported on Red Hill Road.

In Woodbury, damage was light with a few street signs blown clear of their supports.

Damage was heavier in McMinnville and Warren County. With numerous trees and power lines down across the county, blocking several roadways. Trees downed on houses on Old Nashville Highway, Westwood Drive and Cascade Avenue. Trees fell on three vehicles on Whiteoak Drive.

In Rutherford County, 6,142 MTEMC customers lost power. Three power poles were knocked down in the Barfield area where crews worked through the night to restore power.

In total, there were 10 broken poles, four in Rutherford County, five in Cannon County and one in Williamson County.

Wilson County members saw the least amount of impact from the storms. Weather was the main cause of the small outages, and after crews restored power to those out, they were able to lend assistance to the Cannon County crews.

"When conditions are at their worst, our crews are at their best," said Chris Jones, MTEMC president/CEO. "I am proud of the work our line crews, engineers, systems control operators and contract crews did to restore power to those members who were out after this storm."
