On April 27, 2019 the Woodbury Police Department, Woodbury Drug Center and Department of Justice partnered with the newly-established Cannon County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (CCSAPC) for our county's first-ever National Drug Take Back Day event.
The goal of this effort was to reduce the amount of unused and out-of-date prescription drugs from home medicine cabinets to prevent pill abuse and theft. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
As a result of this initiative, the Woodbury Police Department turned over 20.2 pounds of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medication to the Department of Justice for proper disposal.
The CCSAPC would like to thank all those that volunteered to work the event, those that supported the event and those of the community that cleaned out their medicine cabinets and brought the unwanted prescriptions to the take back location.
This take back event will be available again in October 2019. If you did not have an opportunity to participate in this event, we want to remind you that the community has a permanent prescription drug disposal location at the Cannon County Sheriff's office lobby, available 24 hours a day, located at 110 Alexander Dr, Woodbury.
The Cannon County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is comprised of parents, law enforcement, businesses, religious leaders, health providers and other community activists who are mobilizing at the local level to make the community safer, healthier and drug-free.
The next meeting of the CCSAPC will be on Thursday, May 9 from 11 am until 12 noon at the Woodbury Lions Club building, 634 Lehman St., Woodbury. Any citizen interested in participating in the effort of making Cannon County healthier and drug-free is urged to attend.
