Reading is just as important in the summer as it is during the school year so Patti Chappell is hoping Cannon Countians once again take advantage of the Summer Reading Program at Adams Memorial Library.

More than 200 children, teen-agers and adults participated in the program last summer and more than 3,500 books were read in a seven-week span.

“I have just been amazed at the success of the Summer Reading Program,” said Chappell, an assistant at Adams Memorial Library. “We have had an increase in participants and reading each summer. This is something adults and children can do together and it keeps young people active in reading throughout the summer.”

Sign-ups for the fifth Adams Memorial Library Summer Reading Program will begin May 1. Anyone interested in participating may sign up at either Adams Memorial Library or its Auburntown branch. The reading begins May 1, as far as keeping up with the total of books read.

Participants who read throughout the month are eligible for prizes and giveaways at each of the five theme events Chappell has planned throughout the summer.

The first program is a dance performance by students at Cannon Arts Dance Studio. The program is set for May 29 at Dillon Park, from 5-to-7 p.m. Citizens are encouraged to bring your own chairs as seating is limited.

Cumberland Caverns employees will conduct the second program on June 5 at the Head Start Gym at 11 a.m. Interested persons will learn about all the scientific things that occur in a cave.

NHECM will be at the Head Start Gym June 12 at 4 p.m. with an animal exhibit. These are live animals and children always seem to be thrilled when they get the opportunity to see some of the exotic animals live and in person.

Mr. Bond the Science Guy will be on hand for the fourth program, June 19, at Head Start Gym at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Bond amazes the children with experiments that make you wonder how things work.

The final program is the annual swim party at the Woodbury Pool, June 26, from 4-to-6 p.m. The party includes free food, drinks and grand prizes for the top readers throughout the summer.

Chappell said the five theme programs are free and open to anyone interested even if they haven’t signed up for the reading program; however, only persons who have read books will be eligible for the prizes and giveaways during the programs.
