Sticker shock & snow on the buttercups
Tuesday, March 1, 2016 10:14 am News from the MountainBy CAROL GUNTER If you've ever wondered why you have to get a magnifying glass to see the small print to check out the calories, carbs, sugars, and etc. on the different food items you purchase, wonder no more. This morning checking the serving size on a round tub of cranberry pecan chicken salad that I got out of the refrigerator and just a mere 1/3 cup is 300 calories! This was sort of like that 'sticker shock' when you're looking at automobiles at the car lot. I don't know if I ate 1/3 cup of this salad or not. I just know I wasn't as hungry as I thought I was. Maybe that is how a person can lose some pounds by have your appetite taken away by surprise reading the product's label. Paying more attention now - maybe the manufactures are on to something. I have at times just fixed me a plate of something for lunch to eat and halved it into 2 parts and eat the 2nd part at supper. I know no way am I gonna starve doing this and I certainly feel better after eating a lighter supper. When you feel better, you're gonna do better in everything I have found. Some people we need to keep in prayer: the family of Michael Underwood, Ruth Brown, Edith Miler, Fay Pitts, Betty Gunter (Eugene's wife), Jody Reedy, Denise Stanton, Chloe Evelyn Bogle, Carlon and Mai Nell Melton, Pastor Jeff Armstrong, Charlie Mai Daniel (Jackie's wife) and Donna Lawson. One more cloudy and gloomy day this Monday, February 22nd. Rain coming back into the picture for us tonight. Wednesday to be a soaker at 80% chance of rain. Maybe a little snow after rain moves out on Thursday. Sure enough as we do have buttercups blooming around here, the snow will be on them no doubt just like that ole' saying goes. Typical weather for later February with spring about four weeks away. Didn't comment on the Super Bowl earlier this month, but I was sure happy for the Denver Broncos. Peyton may now retire from the game as he would be going out a winner. Defense, defense, and more defense won the game as the Broncos didn't pay attention to being the underdog. They just got down to business and did their homework to win. Got to talk with Mai Nell Melton the other day. She was doing okay. Carlon was in quite a bit of pain that day. Super Tuesday coming up on March 1st so please get out and vote for your favorite candidate and etc. Always exercise your right to vote as the election process is very important. Never do I discuss politics, religion, or fortune cookies with anyone as none of them every turn out the way you would like. Tuesday at Short Mountain Market got to talk with Joe Dorris Curtis, Donna Prater, Bernie Braswell, Debby and Ralph. Glad all in attendance were doing well. Have to tell you about someone telling me a story about how that Liberty mule on the bluff came about. I'm sure you've probably seen it. Seems there was this man a Mr. Robinson as I was told in 1906 that put tar on the rock in the shape of a mule. I wasn't around in 1906, but I'm thinking the person that told me this story could have been. If you have any news for the column, just give me a call at 615-563-4429. Have a great day!
