Angela Schwartz won the Cannon County Assessor of Property post Thursday, August 4, gaining 61.8 percent of the vote.

Schwartz, a deputy to current Assessor Donald Preston, defeated her closest rival, Michael Underhill, who received 22.7 percent of the vote. John Basinger placed third in the four-candidate race with 10.2 percent of the vote. Mrs. Anna Pittman was fourth with 5.1 percent.

Turnout for Thursday's election was light with only 1,220 ballots cast. Absentee and early votes amounted to 630 votes, bringing the total votes cast to 1,850.

The closest local race was for School Board District 1 with incumbent Nathan Sanders retaining his seat with 56.8 percent of the vote. Political newcomer Michael Keith Jones received 43.2 percent of the votes cast at West Side School.

Three other School Board seats were uncontested with Bruce Daniel and Tim Powers winning in Districts 3 and 2 respectively. Board newcomer Javin Fann was also elected without opposition.

In the Road Commissioner race, Terry Horn won in Zone 1, Doyle Duke in Zone 2 and James Hancock (Road Superintendent) was returned to office in Zone 3.

Primary contests for the U.S. House of Representatives and the Tennessee General Assembly held no surprises.

Sixth District Congressman Diane Black outdistanced GOP contender Joe Carr in Cannon County by 52.9 percent versus Carr's 43.6 percent.

Amelia Morrison Hipps was uncontested in the Democratic 6th District primary.

State Rep. Mark Pody, Tennessee House 46th District, was unopposed in the primary.
