Another school year for Cannon County students is on the horizon, and Cannon County schools are busy making preparations.

East Side School is planning a Back-to-School Bash tonight (July 28) beginning at 6 p.m.

Sessions will be offered on: Health Department Services, Banking, Grandparents Raising Students, REACH Afterschool Program, CoverKids Insurance, Dental Services and Meet Your Teacher. The will be a free BBQ dinner and school supplies will also be provided.

Registration for new students attending West Side Elementary School began Monday and will continue through Thursday, August 6 from 8:00 A.M. until 12:00 noon, according to Principal Robert Sain. If you have questions call the school at 563-4482.

School officials said the preparations for the upcoming year began almost immediately after the end of last year.

“Summer is one of the busiest times of the year for us, closing up last year and preparing for the year coming up,” said Cannon County Schools Supervisor of Instruction Marcia Melton.

“We are real busy filling positions, getting text books ordered and teachers are working to get classrooms ready,” Melton added.

One of the main school projects during the summer has been the installation of vestibules at two schools, Cannon County High Schools and Woodland Elementary. The new entrances ways at the schools have been conducted to enhance security, Melton said.

The school system will have a number of people in new positions this year. Barbara Parker returns as Director of Schools, starting August 1, Tim Knox takes over as Principal at CCHS, where he has been serving as Assistant Principal and Athletics Director. Former CCHS principal Kim Parlsey has moved to that same position at Woodland Elementary.

The school system will conduct Inservice Training for teachers and support staff August 3-6.

All Kindergarten students should report to schools for the first time on August 3 from 6-7:30 p.m., and 9th graders should report to the high school from 6-8 p.m. on August 4.

Students will attend class for the first time this year on an abbreviated schedule on Friday, August 7. The will be a Teacher’s Work Day Day (no students) on Monday, Aug. 10 and the first full day of school is set for Tuesday, August 11.

The first break for students – and teachers – will be the Labor Day Holiday on Monday, September 7.
