Police, Sheriff's Dept. can't unlock your car

A new state law prohibits the Woodbury Police and Cannon County Sheriff’s Department from offering locksmithing services to the general public.

That means if you accidently lock your keys in your car, you have to call a locksmith or a friend or relative with an extra key.

Due to the electronic locks and other mechanisms located in today's car there are too many risks associated with attempting to unlock the car. In extreme circumstances, such as a child or animal locked in the vehicle or the person within the vehicle suffering any type of trauma or medical condition, police or the sheriff’s department will assist with gaining access.

Specifically, the law states: “State agencies, counties and municipalities are prohibited from offering locksmithing services to the general public, whether or not a fee is charged.”
