The UT Extension, Cannon County Office is fortunate to have a Career Edge Intern during the months of June and July. Stephanie Patterson, from Murfreesboro is currently a Family and Consumer Sciences Education Major at Middle Tennessee State University.
Patterson currently serves as president of MTSU's chapter of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She is also a member of Chi Omega Fraternity and plans to graduate in December with honors.
Patterson hopes to have a career in Extension in Tennessee as an FCS Agent and was introduced to this internship opportunity by her advisor, Sandra Poirier, Ph.D. Poirier herself was a former agent in Florida, who is currently a professor at MTSU.
Students participating in the Career Edge Internship have the opportunity for an in-depth look at Extension as a career choice. Interns will have the opportunity to observe and/or take part in several effective Extension programs. Some experiences would be to prepare and assist with one or more radio or television programs, write news stories, contribute to a county publication, prepare and deliver demonstrations to FCS audiences, make one or more home visit, and prepare a display about an Extension program for her final report.
Her experiences with mentoring FCS agent, Carla Bush will provide Patterson with time working with Family and Community Education Clubs, parenting classes, babysitting course, grocery store tour, grilling program, and more. Although her interest is in FCS, Stephanie will also observe other Extension programs like 4-H Camp, livestock events, and other agriculture programming in the county.
