Parker Not Seeking Re-election To School Board

One of the two seats up for election on the Cannon County Board of Education in the August General Election will not have an incumbent running.

Roy Parker, who represents the Fifth District on the school board, notified the Cannon County Election Office Wednesday that he is no longer seeking re-election and does not want to be placed on the ballot for the August 5 election.

As of now there are no candidates for the position. Qualifying deadline is April 1 at noon.

The Second District school board seat is also up for election this year. In that race, incumbent Chris Blackburn and John Basinger are running.

Should no candidate emerge for the Fifth District seat by April 1, anyone interested in the position will have until 50 days prior to the election to run as a write-in candidate. They will need to go through the same procedures to qualify, including being a resident of Cannon County, living in the Fifth District, and obtaining at least 25 signatures of registered voters of the district.

If there is not a candidate for the seat, the Cannon County Commission will appoint a person from the Fifth District to the school board.
