So far this football season, big plays have been made by the opponents of Cannon County in the third quarter that helps decide the outcome of that particular game.

Friday night, the Smith County Owls made enough big plays in the first two quarters that by the time the third quarter rolled around, it felt like an entire game had been played.

The Owls, in the hunt for first place in Region 4-3A, executed their offense quickly and perfectly as they racked up 48 points and 372 yards in the first half en route to a scalding 48-0 win over the Lions.

Their win Friday night, coupled with a huge upset of York beating Sequatchie County, forces a three-way region tie between the three teams.

In the first quarter Friday night, Cannon only had the ball a total of four minutes out of the 12-minute period. Smith County scored on the opening drive to make it 7-0 on a 5-play drive that took only 1:23 to complete.

Cannon stalled on each of their 3 possessions, two of them four downs and out, and the other resulting in a one play fumble in which the Owls recovered.

The lone highlight for the Lions was a Michael Williams interception at the Cannon 9-yard-line that prevented a second score in as many possessions for the Owls.

Williams returned it all the way to the 50-yard line as it looked like he was going to be able to return it all the way for a touchdown. Williams stopped however in an attempt to allow his teammates to block for him, but the Owls caught up with him.

The Owls would score on their third possession to go up 14-0. Williams got the ball on a 1st and 10 at the Lions 24 and one of the defenders hit the ball as Williams carried it, popped it loose and the Owls recovered. Smith County would score on the ensuing possession to go up at the end of one 21-0.

The Owls would then score four touchdowns in the second quarter. With 1:30 to play in the half, Smith County connected on a one-play, 68-yard pass. Cannon fumbled away the ensuing kickoff and Smith County scored again with 5 seconds left on the clock but missed the extra point. Cannon went into the half with a total of negative two yards of offense.

The second half went by fast with the mercy rule invoked. Lions got their first first down of the game after Charlie Parrish connected with a 20 yard pass to Cort Litchford. Four plays later, the Lions had to punt and despite being up 48-0, Smith County continued to send their first string offense out on the field. When the Owls got a first and goal situation at the 14 after a penalty, second string offense came in.

The Owls got the ball to the 1-yard-line on a fourth and goal, but Cannon stood them up at the goal line to prevent the only real scoring opportunity by either team of the second half.

Cannon's record runs to 0-8, 0-4 in Region play.

Next up for the Lions is a special Thursday night contest traveling to Chattanooga for the opportunity to play in a college football stadium for the first time since 2009. They will play Whitwell at Finley Stadium on the campus of the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. Game time is 6:00 CST, 7:00 EST.
