UPDATE: According to the company in question, Doxo, the payment submitted by Novoa was sent and received by the Woodbury Water Department. The Cannon County Sheriff's Department has ended its investigation.

A woman has reported to the Cannon County Sheriff's Department that she has been the victim of an apparent online fraud involving an entity posing as having an affiliation with the Woodbury Water Department.

Brittany Novoa reported to Deputy Zach Smith on Aug. 23 that she found a web site -- https://www.doxo.com/info/woodbury-water-department-tn -- that she believed was the web site for the Woodbury Water Department.

Novoa said once on the web site, she was prompted to pay her water bill. Novoa said she was instructed to enter her address, account number and credit card information on the web site after creating an account.

Once the transaction was complete, information on the web site stated the payment would be delivered in approximately 7-10 business days, Novoa said.

Novoa stated she then drove to the Woodbury Water Department to speak with them about the web site. Upon arrival she was informed the water department does not have a web site, nor is is affiliated with any online payment option. Novoa said she then contacted her bank and submitted a request through the web site to cancel the payment.

Deputy Smith attempted to contact someone affiliated with the web site but was unsuccessful. The incident remains under investigation.
