Lionettes Open Tournament Monday At Watertown

Now that the regular basketball season is over, February Fever gets started on the District level with the postseason District 8-AA tournament and the Cannon County Lionettes moved up a spot to finish fifth in the District will now kick the tournament off Monday night at 6:00 with a contest against 8th seeded Smith County. The Lady Owls went winless in the district at 0-14.
The two rounds will be played at Watertown High School.
Second game of the evening will pit the Livingston Lady Cats against the seventh seeded host Watertown Purple Lady Tigers
The winners of these two games will move on to the second round. Cannon vs Smith winner will play the number four seed in the tournament Dekalb County at 7:30 Wednesday night February 19th. Dekalb swept the season series against both teams and finished fourth in the regular season.
The other bracket of the girls will pit number three seed York against the winner of Livingston Watertown. The second round will also be played at Watertown with the York game to kick off the second night of girls action.
From there the tournament shifts to Tennessee Tech on Friday night February 21st Macon County will meet the winner of the Dekalb County game at 7:30. Upperman meets the winner of the York game at 9:00. Winners advance to the championship game Monday February 24th at 9:00. Losers will head to the consolation game to fight for third place Monday February 24th at 7:30.
The Cannon County Lionettes placed four players on the all District 8-AA regular season team.
Bryan College signee Kristin Fann was named first team all district. Cumberland University bound Jessie Kauffman made the second team. Fellow Bryan College signee Taylor Meeks and Anna Grace Sissom who will be heading to Roane State Community College to further her basketball career were both named to the all district third team.

The Cannon County Lions spent most of the District portion of the season hanging out in third place in the district standings. The Lions started to slide down the standings late January after they lost in Watertown and fell down to fifth after losing two more consecutive contests. But the blowout win against Dekalb put the Lions back on track and it came down to the final game Thursday night as they beat Livingston to climb back up to third in the District standings tying Watertown. Watertown lost to more lower seeded opponents than Cannon did. Cannon got the tiebreaker and earned a first round by in the District 8-AA tournament as the number three seed.
The boys portion of the tournament starts Tuesday February 18th at Watertown as the fifth seeded Livingston Wildcats will meet the eight seeded Smith County Owls. Smith County squeaked out two district wins on the season but neither of those wins were against the team from Overton County. Tipoff for the first game of the second night of the tournament will be at 6:00.
Then it's on to the six vs seven seed Macon vs Dekalb. Both teams finished with identical 3-11 district records. Macon and Dekalb split the season series.
Night number two will be Thursday February 20th also at Watertown. Fourth seeded Watertown will meet the winner of the Livingston Smith County game at 7:30 while third seeded Cannon will meet the winner of the Macon and Dekalb contest to kick off the second night at 6:00.
Number one seed Upperman will play the winner of the Watertown game Saturday night at 7:00 at Tennessee Tech. The second seed York will follow with the winner of the Cannon game at 9:30. The winners of those games will battle it out in the tournament championship game Tuesday February 25th at 9:30 with the losers meeting for the consolation game at 7:00 also at Tennessee Tech.
Cannon's games throughout the tournament will be broadcast live through Facebook Live on the Facebook page Cannon Courier News and Events.
Luke Alexander and Gus Davenport landed on the all District 2nd team while Blake Bush made all district 3rd team. Ethan Powell was selected to the all freshman team.
