Cannon County’s General Sessions Judge Susan Melton has announced that she will seek re-election as an Independent candidate during the August 7, 2014 General Election.

Melton, born and raised in Woodbury, Tennessee is the daughter of Martha Turner Melton and the late John Barrett Melton, Jr. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University, Susan pursued graduate studies in Elementary Education from Georgia State University and taught in the classroom for eight years. She later attended and graduated from the Nashville School of Law. Melton comes from a family of lawyers, and has followed in the footsteps of her grandfather, the late J. Barrett Melton, Sr, her father, the late John Barrett (Mose) Melton, Jr., and her brother, the late John Barrett Melton, III.

Melton has served as judge for the Cannon County General Sessions Court and the Cannon County Juvenile Court in Tennessee for 13 consecutive years. She is the former president of the Tennessee General Sessions Judges Conference.

“I am grateful and humbled to have served as Cannon County’s General Sessions Judge for the past 13 years,” Melton said. “I look forward to continuing to make sure the courtroom is the one place where every citizen finds justice and has the opportunity to be heard.”

Melton describes herself as a Conservative Constitutionalist, who seeks justice above all else, while valuing compassion and understanding.

The Cannon County General Election is August 7, 2014, with early voting from July 18th through August 2nd.
