The Cannon County teams were back in action, including some of them in the middle of district play. However, the biggest news of the week came when the Junior Lions football team knocked off their hated rivals DeKalb County for the first time in several years.

CCMS Football
The Junior Lions achieved something which has not happened in many years on Aug. 27 as they knocked off their rival, DCMS 28-26 at Fred Schwartz Field.
CCJL running back Wade Love scored four touchdowns, including a 77-yard run with 1:04 left in the game to tie the game at 26. Love gave them the lead for good when he converted the two-point conversion.
Remington James recovered a fumble to give the Junior Lions an opportunity for the win and Jacob Brock had a game saving interception to preserve the win as they move to 1-3 on the season.
"It was really great, and we have really wanted to beat DeKalb," Brock said after the win. "We got what we wanted."
"I just had to go through it," James added of his fumble recovery. "All we had to do was step up and go through it."
Brady Cunningham also played a key role in the victory, and most importantly he gave his grandmother, who turned 96 this week a happy birthday present with the win.
"Her birthday wish was for us to win this game tonight," Cunningham said. "It feels great and words do not describe it."
The Junior Lions are off until Sept. 17 when they travel to Jackson County.

CCHS Golf
The Lions only had one match this week, but they picked up a 191-239 victory over Gordonsville at the Smithville Golf Club. Hunter Vickers led the way by shooting the Lions lowest round of 42 in the nine-hole match. Briar Jakes and Austin Martin each shot a 47, and Bradly Vickers added 55 as only the top four scores are counted in the final overall result.
"We have played pretty good," Jakes said of the Lions performance so far this season. "We got a lot to improve on, but if we play pretty good, we can compete in the district and win a few more."
The golf team will be back in action on Sept. 1 against Coffee County at Smithville with tee-off at 3:30 p.m.

CCHS Volleyball
A couple of weeks ago, the Lionettes won their first match in a long time over Franklin County, and they were hoping to continue the momentum with three key district matches last week.
As for the win, both the players and coaches were excited and relieved to finally achieve that goal this season after going winless in 2014.
"I felt like we came out a lot stronger than I thought we would," CCHS player Emmy Sissom said. "We were working hard together and we just came out with the win."
Her fellow teammate Katie Hoskins added, "It was amazing, because we have improved a lot from last year. I think our coach (Linda Cook) this year has encouraged us and pushed us to do really well this year."
However, last week the Lionettes competed hard, but fell in three sets to none in losses to Murfreesboro Central Magnet, Livingston and Upperman to drop to 1-5 on the season.
The JV also fell two sets to none to the same three opponents last week.
In the Varsity loss to Livingston, Haylee Mooneyham had three kills, two blocks and two digs, while Sissom added an ace, four blocks, one kill and two digs. Alyssa Whited had a dig, and Hoskins added two blocks and an assist. Shianne Ashford had an ace and a dig.
For the JV team against LA on the same night, Whited had a tip, Taylor Sturgill added a block, Catherine Shaw had a dig and Courtney Talley had one block and two digs.
This week, the Lionettes have three home matches, Aug. 31 against Warren County at 4:30, Sept. 1 versus Smith County and Sept. 3 against Macon County with first serve for both matches at 5 p.m.

CCHS Cross County
Both the Lions and Lionettes opened the regular season on Aug. 29 in the Voyles Classic at Sharp Springs Park in Smyrna with close to 2,000 runners from schools in all divisions, including public and private taking part in the 5,000 meter race.
The Lionettes were led by junior Hannah Whited, who finished in 25th out of 388 runners with a time of 20:56.88, while the Lions were led by fellow classmate Devin Gilpatrick, who finished 120th out of 459 runners with a time of 18:47.49.
Overall, 13 runners for CCHS ran a personal best during the meet. This week, the team has two meets, including the Webb All Comers in Bell Buckle on Sept. 1 and the Warrior Invitational at Murfreesboro Riverdale on Sept. 5.

CCHS Girls Soccer
The Lionettes fell to Smith County in their 2015 season opener on Aug. 25, 8-1. Senior Livia Walker scored the only goal with the assist coming from junior Kallie McCrary. CCHS opens the home portion of the schedule Sept. 1 against White County, and travels to Merrol Hyde two days later.
