With a new school year underway, the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI) reminds educators and parents of an impactful educational resource for teen drivers launched by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) this past spring.

Developed by the NAIC communications team,Insurance 101 for Teen Drivers is a free interactive presentation module that helps teen drivers get smart about insurance. The module and lesson plan empowers classroom educators, parents, and drivers' education teachers to show and tell teen drivers how being an unsafe driver can hurt financially as well as physically.

"It's important to foster safe driving behavior early," said TDCI Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak. "Educating yourself and your new teen driver about the physical risks and financial consequences of careless driving can help keep them safe behind the wheel and save you money."

The Insurance 101 teaching module features a 55-minute program divided into three segments: a lecture to define basic insurance terms; a demonstration of how to request a quote; and an interactive "It's Your Choice" decision-making game. Presentation materials include an animated PowerPoint®, an auto insurance terms handout, a worksheet for use during the game, and a combined multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank quiz.
