The first season of the Cannon County Middle Grade basketball team came to an end last weekend in Chapel Hill at the Forest School Tournament with both teams losing in the finals of the four-team single elimination tournament.

Even with all the debate on both sides just to form this program, I believe at the end of the season this is the start of a new beginning for Cannon County.

"I cannot express how proud I am of each of these young ladies," CCMG Lionettes head coach Ashley Cantrell said last week in a postseason recap. "They came together from many different schools, playing against each other and in just a short six to seven weeks, they became a team. They formed those friendships we were looking for, and they progressed every week as a player and a teammate. I believe these young ladies set a great example for middle school teams to come, and we are very proud of them and we are looking forward to next year."

CCMG Lions head coach Jared Nave added, "I was extremely proud, if you would have come to our first practice, and come to our last one. A few kids were kind of shy and were not talking to everybody, and at the last practice everybody is just cutting up with each other. They were focused on winning, and becoming a team. It was the most satisfying to see. When you see lives and they are starting to gel and start becoming good friends. I love to see that more than any wins we could possibility get, I was proud of them for that."

Honestly, I hoped when this program was created many months ago this would happen at the end. Of course, with bringing together players who were used to being rivals for their respective schools and making them to work together as one unit, there were some growing pains at first. However, as they got used to each other, everybody started to come together, and they got better as a team.

I just hate that the season is already over, but this season proved each school can still compete against each other for county titles, while in the end they can also work together to make the overall county program better as the Lions and Lionettes take on the rest of the Volunteer state. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this program as they will work together in competing for championships.
