A new flag pole was erected at Short Mountain School in honor of principal Robert Pitts' 50 years of service as a teacher and principal.

The flag ceremony was arranged by Hilton Stone American Legion Post 279. John Basinger was program chairman.

"The post surveyed the school system about American Flags and discovered that Short Mountain School was in most need," Basinger said.

A new flag pole was purchased by Post 279. Middle Tennessee Electric dug the hole and Cannon County maintenance supervisor Daryl Fisher poured the concrete to erect the pole.

After finding out about Mr. Pitts long service to Cannon County Schools, Post 279 dedicated the pole in the principal's honor.

A number of County Commissioners, School Board members, principals, Director of Schools Barbara Parker, County Executive Mike Gannon were in attendance along with members of Mr. Pitt's family, wife Beverly Pitts, daughters, Bridget Simmons, Cindy Pitts and Kayla George and grandchildren, Kaylan Simmons, Brinley Simmons, Asher Simmons, Carter Gage and Cora Gage.
