The last few months have been busy for the students and faculty of East Side School.

A Red Cross Blood Drive was held during January with several people participating.  Also in January, two teachers and our principal had the opportunity to attend Singapore math training in Murfreesboro to learn more about this new approach to math.

The countywide spelling bee was hosted at our school during February.  We were honored to have two of our own students place first and second which qualified them to advance to the state competition in Nashville.

We were also proud of our girls’ basketball team who brought home the 1st place trophy in Auburn’s B-Team tournament for the first time in school history.

Our science fair was held in March with many great entries including a built-to-scale catapult, which was put to the test in front of the entire student body.  Our parents were also invited to join us for an after school science fair presentation from the Discovery Center.

More than sixty students participated in an unusual event when they traveled to Murfreesboro to watch our high school girls’ basketball team play in the first state tournament game for our county in nineteen years.

Throughout the year, our 6th, 7th, and 8th grades have participated in several virtual field trips on our new distance learning technology. One field trip gave the students experience working as Crime Scene Investigators, another allowed the students to interact with a Civil War nurse to study the medical conditions during the Civil War. The students also had a chance to meet a child author and participate in a game show about the U.S. government.

Several of our students in other grades have been involved in various project-based activities including making cell pies, launching rockets, building globes, and personally meeting a member of the NASA shuttle design team.

Several more exciting things are planned in the upcoming months as our staff works hard to make learning meaningful and fun for the students of East Side School.
