Election Next Year For One County Commission Seat

One of the 10 Cannon County Commission seats will be up for election next year, according to the Cannon County Election Office.

The election will be for the purpose of filling an unexpired term on the Commission.

It has been brought to the attention of the Cannon County Election Commission that a vacancy occurred earlier this year on the Cannon County Commission (legislative body), District 4.

The County Commission filled the seat, but TCA 5-1-104 states that “vacancies in county offices required by the Constitution of Tennessee or by any statutory provision to be filled by the people shall be filled by the county legislative body, and any person so appointed shall serve until a successor is elected at the next general election.”

A General Election is scheduled for August 2, 2012 and the Cannon County Republican Party has called a Primary Election for March 6, 2012.

As a result, the office of County Commissioner, District 4 (one of two seats and held previously by Wimberley / temporary Tony Neal) will be listed on the ballot for both the March and August elections.

Republican candidates must qualify for the March primary election by petition and the petitions must be returned to the election office no later than NOON December 8, 2011. Independent candidates, who will appear on the August ballot, must also qualify be petition and petitions must be returned to the election office no later than NOON December 8, 2011.

In other Election Office news, the office will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 23 and will not reopen until Monday, Nov. 28 at 8 a.m.

Also, the Election Commission will not meet in December. They will next meet on Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the Election Office.
