Davenport wins Larry Trail scholarship



Presented by WCHS Class of 1970

The seventh award of the "Class of 1970 - Larry Trail Memorial Scholarship" was presented Tuesday evening April 30, 2013 during Awards Night at Cannon County High School.

Class of l970 representative and scholarship selection committee member, Kenny Gilley, presented the award of $1,000 to Ellen Davenport of 1902 Hill Creek Road, Woodbury. Ellen is the daughter of Bob and Tonya Davenport.

While at CCHS, Ellen was ranked in the Top Ten percentile in her class. She was a class officer for three years and on the student council for one year. She participated in both Junior and Senior Beta Clubs.

In the Canon County community , Ellen is very active in the youth group of First Baptist Church and has volunteered at We Care in Cannon County. Also, she has volunteered at Feed the Children in Nashville.

Ellen plans to attend MedVance Institute in Cookeville, Tennessee. Her educational path at the institute will enable her to become a Radiology Technologist with an Associate Degree in Applied Science. After graduating from MedVance Institute she hopes to either work in a doctor's office or in the hospital in Cannon County.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving high school senior who plans to pursue a college degree. The student must be graduating from Cannon County High School and accepted by an accredited college or university. The candidate must submit an application and test results from the ACT and/or SAT.

The application must be accompanied by a 300-500 word essay, which explains why he or she deserves this scholarship and how winning it could benefit the Cannon County community. Additionally, a complete high school transcript plus a letter of acceptance from the college or university the student plans to attend must be included with the application.

The Woodbury High School Class of 1970 established the scholarship fund in memory of Class member Larry Trail who passed away August 21, 2006. Members of the class of 1970 contribute to the fund each year.

Because Larry's work in the community was so well known and appreciated, the fund is open to contributions from anyone who desires to contribute.
